i think this was the first pic ever taken of me. That's my mum's hands holding me so i won't topple over. In Secunderabad, i think.... must hav been about 4 or 5 My stage debut (actually, my second performance) age about 7, 8. i'm there somewhere in the back, strummin' me cardboard guitar... Madras, St Mathias's school Detail from the pic on the left. It was also the end of my music career. About 10 years old... i'd just got a cowboy set for Christmas, with a plastic knife where the blade goes into the handle as it meets resistance... remember those? At Vizag, my grandparent's house.

In dad's old "sharkskin" jacket, striking what i fondly hoped was a Bond pose. Age 15. Hmmm. 17ish. Just recovered from jaundice, which accounts for the absence of avoirdupois. At Karasgaon. Age 18, approx. Jaundice already in the distant past. About age 19, 20... in the BARC lawns. No, not a confused identity moment. In makeup for a play. i was attempting a kinda Joel Grey take off.
It didn't.
Take off, i mean.

One of the bearded phases. In Ooty. In '89... just back from Delhi, from dancing at the Asian Track & Field opening and closing ceremonies, after a few months of daily rehearsals. Therefore relatively streamlined. First time in the high mountains. at Auli, in Uttaranchal. That's the Himalayas in the background. China's on the other side, i'm told. Sunburnt thing in the foreground is me. Feb 1998. Being dragged up the ski slope by what is called a J-bar lift, or more inelegantly, a bum-lift..

Photo by Ayesha Monani. taken while waiting for models to show up on a shoot. Pained expression is because i'm in the office. Delusions of grandeur. On the steps at Balaram Palace, Palanpur, Gujarat, India Still at Palanpur. Still feeling regal. Waiting for dancing girls with grapes to show up in the courtyard. At Palanpur. A commoner moment.
As Best Man at Prakash and Lisa's wedding. 1st May 2000. Upslope on the J-Bar   With artistic collaborator Laika. About to go rafting. Near Rishikesh.  Getting a massage from pal Tina after a tiring day on the slopes. Only two other things can put that goofy expression on my face. One of them is apple pie.
