Exciting news -- you'll never guess what... I've just heard from Vernon! Apparently he's founded a little theatre company, which is just what he always wanted. It's lucky he managed to save up all that money, despite the difficulties of the British economy at the end of the eighties, isn't it? If you haven't been keeping up with him over the last few years, you won't know that he moved to London where for a while he was importing environmentally friendly goods from Germany. The last time I remember seeing our old chum Vernon was when we were in Birmingham and he was selling jam to supermarkets. Do you recall that time we were all in Budgens and he sold that jam and we all gaped in wonder as we exclaimed "Wow, he sold that jam so successfully!"? Happy days, eh? Still, plenty of time to catch up on all his news -- he's invited us all to his theatre's fifth birthday party in the autumn! What a great bloke, our Vernon.
News of Vernon reaches Heidelberg
I hope he is as much of a success over there as he undoubtedly has been
here...English jam could well be a success story in Germany too. And to
think that his father believed he would never become a business
man...Vernon's a shining example to us all showing us how a bit of
Cambridge, a spoonful of dedication, long hours spent with the Green
Party and student theatre productions can produce a real human icon.
It was not without true justification that Vernon received his OBE
following his inclusion in the New Year's honours list. As the
Prime Minister said when addressing a gathering of sixth formers in Cumbria
last week: "...we must strive to follow the example of those who have
successfully gone before us and shown the way into a new era of dynamism
in British industry and the Arts. By doing what they have done we can
secure the position of today's new and exciting Britain..." Vernon Steel
came from amongst literally jam pots to become one of those who have led
the way into this era of dynamism...
