Designed to be the natural replacement for the Challenger 1, 386 Challenger 2 have been ordered by the British Army, with deliveries running from 1993 to 2000 . Oman has ordered 18. It presents important innovations from the Challenger. Among this, the improved 6 gear TN54 box gives it a most all-terrain capability than its predecessor, a quality always looked forward by the british since the WWII times. The hull and engine are the same that the Challenger I, but the tower has been completely redesigned. This brand new turret fits the latest 120 mm L30 rifled tank gun, firing a new APFSDS-T (Armour Piercing Fin Discarding Sabot Tracer) projectile with a depleted uranium penetrator. The tank commander has estabilized sight system, french designed, while the shooter has a laser sight system designed by the british firm Barr & Stroud. Also, this system is connected to a improved thermic sight and fire system which makes it a very tough opponent in night combat. The fire control system is new, too, from the Canadian CDC industries. Also, the tank is equipped with a improved and complete NBC system.
