The Leopard 2a is the most developed design of german industries in armour subject. This is the main battle tank in the German Army and in several others NATO countries, including Australia, Canada, Benelux, Switzerland, Spain and another five european countries. It's the natural replacement of the Leopard 1 born in 1965. At first, the replacement was to be the German-American MBT in 1970, but this program was canceled and Germany keep developing the leopard 2, first production in 1979. Since then, far over 3000 have been built, and in 1994 the production started again for Sweden. Since then, this Leopard has confirmed that is an excelent weapon, with a very good combination of mobility, armour, and firepower. Its outstanding road speed of 72 kmh relies on a sofisticated last generation suspension system. It is well armoured, maybe not such as british would like, but its mobility gives it a sustantial protection. Also, it is equipped with a complete NBC system and a fast reacting fire extinguisher system. There are a Swiss version, the Pz 87, and a Swesish one, the Strv 122.
