Pockets of Serenity in Vegas by Rosario Albar
Gondolas at the Venetian Hotel
Four floors above the incessant screaming of wheel of fortune machines under a cloud of noxious cigarette smoke, I am preparing for a few hours of total relaxation.  An attendant At Canyon Ranch SpaClub(R) at The Venetian Hotel hands me a white robe and slippers, my uniform for the next few hours.  I change as fast as I can so I can immerse myself in the whirlpool for a few minutes until I feel my tired muscles loosen up before soaking in the steam room.  Then my name is called and I am led to the body treatment room where soothing music is playing unobtrusively and lights are low.

The moisturizing treatment begins with a light exfoliation scrub after which I am sent to the shower to rinse off.  Then a rich mixture of oil and goat's milk is applied to my skin.  When this is done, I am wrapped in linens and my bed is lowered to water level where I am enveloped in warmth and comfort for the next few minutes while the moisturizing emollients saturate my skin.  How I wish I could stretch time so I can stay in this luxurious cocoon longer, where calm and peace permeate my being.  When the treatment ends, my body feels rejuvenated and my skin is positively glowing.

At the Canyon Ranch Cafe, I order the parmesan wrapped halibut with tomato and asparagus salsa.  The food lives up to both my famished and gourmand expectations.  While the serving portion is modest, it is nonetheless filling and quite tasty.  Cheese lightly wraps the halibut and does not overpower the taste buds. I have fulfilled the message from a fortune card I picked earlier with this meal.  It says, "Seek moderation, not deprivation."

One good spa treatment should be followed by another.  Early the next morning, I find my way to Spa Mandalay for more pampering.  I am determined to greet the New Year refreshed and full of renewed vigor.

The Spa Mandalay has a generous-size whirlpool with waterfalls.  There are lounge chairs to stretch out and relax before going into treatment.  Today I've chosen the deep pore cleansing facial which includes a paraffin treatment for both hands and feet.  The facial is a five-step purifying process that removes impurities from the face.  It is followed by a massage of the face, nape and neckline.  The final touch is a triple clay-purifying mask.

I am in no rush to leave the spa after my facial is completed.  I linger a while longer, taking a short nap in the relaxation lounge before dressing up for my next appointment.  The New Year is only hours away and I'm ready to welcome it with my newfound serenity.
