Axis Class Destoyer | ||
Mission To serve as a swift patrol vessel in remote areas for extended periods of time. Also intended to serve as light fire support for fighters and other small craft during fleet engagements. Features The Axis is a member of the Cheyenne/New Orleans Family, closely related to the larger Nebula and Galaxy Classes. The Axis is made up of a standard saucer section attached to a prototype drive section housing the impulse reactors and two warp nacelles. The Axis is equipped with standard sensors, shields and computer systems, isn't outfitted with torpedos of any kind, but is armed with two powerful Type XII Phaser Emitters. The entire ship is also sheathed in a paper thin (3.5cm) layer of ablative armor History After the Freedom class had already entered service, it was quickly becoming clear that too much of a burden was being placed on these ships, so Starfleet wanted another destroyer design based on the Galaxy class familly ready for full fleet production. The ship was designed in 2366 and construction began early in 2367 alongside the Defiant class Escort. After 7 and a half months, 12 ships had already been launched from the Antares IV Shipyards and another 18 were under construction. Most of the ships were sent to the outer rims of federation territory, conducting extended patrol and surveilance missions. The Axis was used extensively in the Dominion War primarily as a scout, but also performed escort and hit and run missions. During the Second Romulan War, the Axis made up the backbone of Starfleet's Destroyer Force and played a pivatal role defending the Epsilon III starbase from an enemy advance. Today ships of the Axis class continue to serve Starfleet in many capacities and have played a key role in the exploration of the Gamma Quadrant.
