The
Cochin University came into being on July 10, 1971 by the Cochin
University Act, for promotion of higher education and research
in the Greater Cochin area with emphasis on Science, Technology,
Industry and Commerce. The Cochin University Act was replaced by
the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) Act, 1986
extending the territorial jurisdiction to the whole of the state
and converting it into a full fledged University of Science & Technology.
It has at present 27 departments of study and research, a Centre
for Undergraduate Engineering Studies, an Engineering College at
Pulinkunnu,Kuttanad, Alappuzha, three recognized Colleges of
Engineering and a host of recognized institutions of research.
The performance of the University has reflected in its being
chosen as the only Indian University to receive long term massive
financial assistance from the Government of Netherlands under the
MHO programme. Ambitious in its strides to assume international
proportions, the University has entered into academic tie-up with
the Brethern Colleges Abroad, USA, as a part of which the University
has been imparting instruction to two batches of students from 1997
onwards.The University has a 180 acre campus at Thrikkakara and
Lakeside Campus at Kochi.
