I'm proud to be a
Beaufoy
Honestly though, the ancestors of the modern day Beaufoy families really did arrive in Britain with William the Conquerer, who was actually related albeit by marriage a few generations previously.
Back in 1066, the surname was Beaufou. William de Beaufou was Bishop of Thetford around 1085. His son, Richard, became Archdeacon of Norwich in 1107.
After approximately 500 years worth of much begat-ting, 'Beaufoy' became a household name. Henry Beaufoy was born in 1605, son of Thomas Beaufou of Guyscliffe. Thomas had two brothers, Henry and Joseph. Of this pair, the latter had 3 sons called Griffin, Samuel and Robert. It's the line from Griffin that leads eventually to me.
Griffin and his family lived in and around Meriden and Evesham, which are in the Midlands, in England. One of Griffin's great-grandsons, who happened to be my great-great-great-great-grandfather, Samuel, lived in Town Sutton, Kent (1749-1823).
Did you know that another of Samuel's great-great-great-great-grandsons is most famously known for writing recent British hit movies?
"The Full Monty" & "Among Giants" were both written by
Simon Beaufoy
Anyway, the name Beaufoy is now internationally recognised with people proudly bearing it in such exotic locations as New Zealand, Australia, Canada, USA and Rugby.
