Nena

Pancho

Pancho with Nena hector.. monkey madness
The refuge now has over 500 animals of various species:

 3 pumas, 5 ocelots, 1 jaguar,12 spider monkeys, 120 squirrel monkeys,100 capuchino monkeys, 1 saki, 3 night monkeys, 2 tamasins,1 dusky titi, 32 turtles, 90 tortoises, 3 macaus, 2 toucans, 4 owls, 4 hawks, 100 parrots, 1 boaconstrictor.

All animals at the refuge have come from either circuses, animal traders, or bad homes. All have been badly treated in one way or the other. Inti Wara Yassi serves to rehabilitate them to a state whereby either they are able to return to the wild or at least cure them of any ailments they have been afflicted with, all animals are welcomed to stay and none are ever turned away.

Below I have detailed  background information on two of the oldest refuge inhabitants . Please take the time to have a look at the photographs. We welcome recommendations, questions or information requests please e-mail [email protected] and we will get back as soon as possible.
Nene the puma

Nene was originally caught in the mountains of Chile when he was 2 months old. Captured as a cub by hunters he was sold on to a Bolivian circus, where he spent a year in captivity chained to a stake and as a pay per view sideshow. His owners were so afraid he would escape they had his back legs broken.

Lack of proper nourishment, medical attention and exercise caused Nene to develop a calcium deficiency leading to a severe lack of growth.

Nene was rescued by Inti War Yassi and has now been with the refuge for 1.5 years, there he has been able to learn how to walk again, run, chase and grow !! He is fully recovered but he will probably never return to the wild. Having spent his first years in captivity his ability to hunt and kill his own food may never properly develop.

Nene was released, however 3 days later he was found back at the refuge waiting for his food !

Pancho the spider monkey

Pancho was one of the first spider monkeys to arrive at the refuge. Pancho similar to Nene had been caught when he was an infant. His mother had been shot by hunters and he had been taken to animal traders.

Pancho spent 2 years with a family whose father and 2 sons kept him caged and used to beat him regularly. This affected him to such a degree that until recently he was unable to approach any human male.

Pancho has been with the refuge now for 2 years. Pancho has been freed however he tends to spend most of his time hanging around at the refuge amidst the other animals.
