CHAIN TO SHAFT CONVERSION
A simple but still quite work-intensive solution to converting a differntial to chain drive, is to fit a 'Middle' (transfer) Box from the Yamaha XS 750, 850 or 1100 range of shaft drive bikes, or the same part from a Honda
VT 500.

The ratio is 1:1 as standard, but the engine output sprocket teeth might need to be worked on to give the correct gearing at the axle, depending on what bike engine you are going to use.

Above is a basic diagram of how the shaft drive should be fitted.
Each trike will be different so the layout should be designed to match.
Here is the Middle box used in a Triumph twin frame, with the unit fitted 'upside down'. There is an oiling point on the top of the unit when fitted in it's usual position, and the builder has drilled and tapped a new hole (Arrowed).
Another solution could be to use the original hole, and make a small reservior with a metal tube tapped at both ends. The reservior would be higher than the unit and would be gravity fed.
I recently found a site which details a conversion using Austin Mini components to convert from chain drive.
Here is a pic of one in a hillclimb special, and a link to the site.

For further reference, there is a thread on the ChopperbuilderUK
forum, trike section, which details the above conversion with pictures.
