Biography Anthony Celebreeze was born Sept. 4, 1910 in Anzi, Italy. He moved with his family to the U.S. when he was a small child. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. In 1936 he passed the bar exam and began working for the Ohio Unemployment Commission. In 1950, Celebrezze ran for a seat on the Ohio state Senate and won. He served as a senator from 1951 to 1953. In 1952 when he sought re-election to the Senate, he ran into trouble when he crossed the Democratic party chairman, Ray T. Miller, by supporting DiSalle for the Senate instead of Carney. He was renominated by his party and won the general election. Celebrezze resigned in 1952 to run for Mayor of Cleveland. In the open primary Celebrezze pulled off a surprise victory over Republican McDermott. Celebrezze was Mayor from 1953 to 1962. In 1958 he sought the nomination for Governor of Ohio, but lost to Michael DiSalle. From 1962 to 1965, Celebrezze served in the cabinets of Presidents Kennedy and Johnson as the Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare. In 1965 Johnson appointed Celebrezze to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit. He served as a federal appeals judge until his death in 1998. He is buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Brook Park, Ohio.
