G'day!

. . . well, that's what they say here in Australia, where I find myself these days.

If you want a potted history, well, here it is:

I was born in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, in 1943 as Mr Hitler's bombs rained down.

Emigrated to Rhodesia at the tender age of 13, where I had the character-building experience of being vilified by my Rhodesian-born classmates at Hatfield High for being a "chum", "pommy", "limey" and other assorted names associated with being an immigrant.

I forgave, but didn't forget. The insults faded as my northern English accent

mellowed (and they began to understand what I said!).

Joined the Rhodesia Herald as an apprentice compositor in 1960, qualifying in 1965.

Worked in the UK, Zambia (where I met wife-to-be, Eileen) ,

Rhodesia and then South Africa as a compositor.

Found journalism a much better career path in 1970 and worked for

all the Durban newspapers at one time or another.

Emigrated to Australia January 1983 with Eileen and son Andrew.

Worked for the Daily Sun and Sunday Sun in Brisbane through '83, then moved to Perth, where I worked on the Daily News until it fell victim in 1990 to the media machinations of the then Labor Government.

I then found work with The West Australian newspaper,

where I still find myself gainfully employed as a sub editor and

technology trainer on the Danish CCI editing and page

makeup system.
