EDWIN CHADWICK LONDON
The Chadwick name occurs in London in the person of Edwin Chadwick: thanks to the ABC screening of a BBC  TV program that tells the story of great Engineering feats of the world.

This man was important in the 1840s  Cholera Epidemic - he was concerned that something be done to prevent the spread of Cholera,  a disease not at all understood in this era.

In London in the cholera epidemic of 1831-2  killed about  7,000 people,  and in the next epidemic in 1848-9 about 15,000 died. In both epidemics more got the disease but did not die.

Edwin Chadwick was a "Great Social reformer" in London and believed - as everyone did  - that the disease was spread by  found smells of  in the  city - due to open drains for all effluent whichh all went into the Thames and the smell was unbearable. People got their drinking water from this river too.    He convinced  the city authorities of London to install a proper drainage system to carry away the  sewage to the sea  and with it the smells and so prevent cholera.
In 1842 Edwin Chadwick published  this 'Report on the Sanitary Conditions of the Laboring
Population of Great Britain' which reflected his survey of life expectancy in country people to those in cities. The death rate was much higher in the cities  and  this shocked many people.  This led to the formation of  a Royal commission and the passing of the Public Health   Act 1848 designed to improve the health of  citizens which eventually led to the construction of effective underground sewage system for all London which reduced the incidence of cholera. That was not controlled fully  until  all drinking water was not contaminated by sewerage.

Edwin Chawick was born in January 1800 in Longsight near Manchester wher he was educatd as a lwyer and  his family  moved to London in 1820. He also worked as a  jurnalist and used these skills to assist in social reform See

Edwin Chadwick was the son of  James Chadwick and grandson of Andrew Chadwick who was a freind of John Wesley. Edwin Chadwick was a major Newspaper editor as well as many other things.see
