Ode to Spot

by Data

Felis catus is your taxonomic nomenclature.
An endothermic quadroped, carnivorous by nature.
Your visual, olfactory, and auditory senses
Contribute to your hunting skills and natural defenses.

I find myself intrigued by your sub-vocal oscillations,
A singular development of cat communications
That obviates your basic hedonistic predillection
For a rhythmic stroking of your fur to demonstrate affection.

A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents.
You would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance.
And when not being utilized to aid in locomotion,
It often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion.

Oh, Spot, the complex levels of behavior you display
Connote a fairly well-developed cognitive array.
And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehend,
I none the less consider you a true and valued friend.

Exact translation has been sacrificed for the sake of poetry!! :)

Felis catus (or domesticus) is your scientific name.
Warm-blooded and four-legged. Eating meat's your claim to fame.
Your eyes, your nose, and both your ears are really very nice.
They help you to defend yourself and also to catch mice.

This thing you do called "puring" is a nifty way to speak.
It's only found with cats, which makes your kind unique.
But you do it so selfishly to let me know just when
You want me to come scratch your back or pet you once again.

You use your tail a lot when you do your flips and jumps.
You couldn't do it quite so well if your tail was just a stump.
And if you're not just using it to help you get around,
It is the kitty version of a smile or a frown.

Oh, Spot, you do some rather intelligent things,
Which leads me to believe you aren't as stupid as you seem.
And though you aren't a human, Spot, and I can't quite explain,
I have to let you know that I love you just the same.
