The Science
Patrol
(Science Special
Investigation Team)
KAGAKU
TOKUBETSU SOHSA TAI
(KAGAKU
TOKUSOH TAI or KATOKUTAI)
The
Science Patrol is a branch of the International Police organization. With a
primary headquarters in Paris, their main purpose is to investigate and defend
against unusual cases that can't be resolved by ordinary police (for example,
monster appearances, alien invasions, things like that). They have a vast array
of mecha and weapons. Located just outside of Tokyo, the Japanese branch is led
by Captain Muramatsu and is assisted by young Hoshino and brainy Professor
Iwamoto. They are to be taken seriously, even though they dress in outlandish
orange uniforms and can rarely win their battles without intervention from
Ultraman.
Note:
All members' names are spelled using KATAKANA (usually reserved for foreign or
futuristic words), not KANJI (traditional Chinese-based characters). I believe
most Science Patrol members were given first names post-series, in the YOMIGAERE!
URUTORAMAN ('Revive! Ultraman') special. The Science Patrol Supports Ultraman.

Captain
(TOSHIO) MURAMATSU
Portrayed by: Shohji Kobayashi
The
consummate avuncular captain, who sets the standard for all captains that
follow. Strict when it comes to the mission and tolerates no disobedience,
but gentle on a personal level. Loves to smoke a good pipe. Affectionally
called "Cap." Known as "Captain Mura" in the U.S. dub.
The late Shohji Kobayashi has numerous cameo roles throughout the
subsequent Ultra series, and also had great longevity in the wildly
popular 'Kamen Rider' franchise. It was said that his name on a children's
show guarantees its success.
|
|
|
(SHIN)
HAYATA
Portrayed by: Susumu Kurobe
An elite team
member who distinguishes himself in combat on countless occasions. Merges
with Ultraman in episode 1 when the two accidentally collide above
Ryuh-ga-mori. Transforms into Ultraman using the Beta Capsule. Often takes
command of his teammates when Captain Muramatsu is not available, and can
be quite bossy. Grim and somewhat constipated.
|
|
|
(MITSUHIRO)
IDE
Portrayed by: Masanari Nihei
The clumsy
and light-hearted comedian who is also a brilliant gadget man. He creates
and maintains the Science Patrol's missles, guns, and even monster
language translators. At one point he loses faith in his own value to the
team, since Ultraman always shows up to save the day anyway.
|
|
|
(DAISUKE)
ARASHI
Portrayed by: Ikichi Ishii (later known as Sandayuh Dokumamushi)
The
courageous tough-guy marksman. The primary user of the powerful Spider
Shot. His membership in the Science Patrol is temporarily revoked in
episode 36.
Shares a bunk
with Ide and snores loudly.
Actor Ishii
also portrays Furuhashi in the Ultra Garrison.
|
|
|
AKIKO
FUJI
Portrayed by: Hiroko Sakurai
The
communcations operator (not unlike Uhura from "Star Trek").
Fuji often
gets stuck playing the traditional female role. She occasionally messes up
her duties, making coffee with salt instead of sugar. She's not very good
with numbers, either. Her specialty is Akiko Soup, which she makes for
Arashi at one point. Her femininity kicks into high gear when she rages
against Gamakujira for eating pearls (her birthstone) in episode 14.
She gets
great pleasure out of bossing around young Hoshino, although he is at
times more intuitive than she is. Has a younger brother named Satoru.
Fuji does get
to see some action on the field. She can zap with her Super Gun as well as
any of the guys (except Arashi). She is turned into a rampaging giant by
Mephilas-seijin and gets to knock down buildings with her bare hands in
episode 33.
Actress
Sakurai has made numerous cameo appearances throughout the history of
subsequent Ultra series. Her most prominent role, however, is as Yuriko
Edogawa in the prequel, Ultra Q. See an awesome autographed image of Fuji.
|
|
|
ISAMU
HOSHINO
Portrayed by: Akihide Tsuzawa
An
enthusiastic young cadet who is permitted to freely go in and out of
headquarters, and occasionally tags along for the ride. Often gets swept
into the action. Allowed to wear a Science Patrol uniform later in the
series.
|
|
|
Professor
IWAMOTO
Portrayed by: Akihiko Hirata
A scientist
who helps out the Science Patrol on occasion. First appears in episode 5.
Invents the booster rocket that allows the Jet Beetle to fly in space in
episode 16. Attacked and impersonated by Zetton-seijin in the final
episode
|
The
Science Patrol has a vast arsenal of mecha, with which they support Ultraman.
|
|
Science
Patrol Headquarters
Constructed
of reinforced concrete, with a special defensive alloy. The Jet VTOL takes
off from the landing pad to the right. The Mini-VTOL launches from a the
side of the main building, on the left.
|
|
|
Jet
VTOL
The main
workhorse of the Science Patrol. A Vertical Take-Off and Landing craft
that launches missles, fires lasers, douses flames, hauls monsters, and
performs various other functions. Boosters allow it to escape Earth's
atmosphere and fly into space. There is a little hole in the cockpit
window that allows Ide
to stick a gun through.
This plane is
sometimes anglicized "Jet Beetle" because of the way it is
pronounced in Japanese (including on the official TPC Web site and
elsewhere). However, there is some evidence from the original show itself
that VTOL is the originally intended name. (Episode 7 according to Matt
B., and episode 16 according to E. Bernhard Warg.) On the other hand,
there have been references to "Beetle" on the official TPC Web
site and elsewhere.
|
|
|
Mini-Beetle/Mini-VTOL
Smaller triangular version of the Jet Beetle/VTOL. Seats two people. It's
actually an "STOL," a Short Take-Off and Landing vehicle.
Launches from a panel on the side of the main building of headquarters,
right at the shooting-star logo.
|
|
|
The
Science Patrol Car
The Science
Patrol's patrol vehicle. Hip old Chevy, made in the U.S. of A., that can
draw a crowd of children. Has a couple of logos slapped on the doors and
doesn't look like much more than an ordinary car, but apparently the
insides are of special construction.
|
|
|
The
Science Patrol Sub
The Science
Patrol's underwater transportation. Air-lifted by the Jet VTOL. There are
a number in the fleet, designated as S16, S21, and S25. Sees action in wet
episodes like episode 1 and episode 24.

Underground
Tank Pelucidar
A drill
machine. Rear hatch. Headlight and laser up top. Gets kicked around by
monster Goldon in episode
29. William A. Schwartz shares this interesting tidbit... "the
name was derived from the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel entitled 'At the
Earth's Core.' In the story, two explorers travel into the Earth in a
drill mecha called the Iron Mole and discover the world of Pelucidar which
was full of dinosaurs." Is that cool or what?
|
|
|
Supergun
The standard
firearm of the Science Patrol. Releases a zigzaggin stream of energy. You
rarely get to see it work, but on one occasion, combining the streams from
three guns was enough to destroy a monster. (Source(s):
[UDH], p. 93).
|
|
|
Spider
Shot
Powered by
nuclear energy, apparently. Arashi's favorite weapon. (Source(s): [UDH], p. 93; [SY4M7] p. 26).
|
|
|
Mars
133
About as
powerful as Ultraman's Specium Ray. (Source(s):
[UDH], p. 93; [SY4M7] p. 26).
|
|
|
Monster
Translator
Able to
understand a monster's language. Ide is one amazing inventor! (Source(s): [SY4M7] p. 26).
|
|
|
The
Phoenix
Not part of
the Science Patrol's standard equipment, but I include it here because
this is my favorite vehicle from the show. A rocketship designed by Prof.
Iwamoto, which appears in episode 16 to pick up members of the Science
Patrol stranded on planet R. I love it because it looks like a flying
coffee pot.
