The fourth season opens with Klingons swarming through the station-and one joining the crew. The outsiders harass civilians and interrupt shipping, prompting Dax to observe, "The longer (they) are here, the worse things are going to get." Captain Sisko can think of only one solution: "The only ones who can handle Klingons...are Klingons." Enter Worf, who discovers a plot by his home world to invade Cardassia. But when the Federation condemns the invasion, The Klingons withdraw from their federation treaty.

The fourth season finale finds Odo fighting for his life against a backdrop of increased Klingon militarism. After suffering a seizure in Garak's shop, Odo finds he can no longer maintain his human form. He is, as Dr. Bashir notes, "in a state of fluctuation." The solution: Odo must be taken to the founders' homeworld-0via a perilous trip through Dominion space that Sisko will risk to save his friend, En route, the Defiant is intercepted by the Jem'Hadar, led by a female shape-shifter who informs Odo that they have caused his affliction in a plot to bring him home to "be judged" for killing one of their own.

Odo returns to the founders' homeworld in hopes of a cure for a mysterious disease. Instead, he's judged by them for killing one of their own-and stumbles on an ominous secret.
