It is with sadness that we note the passing of Ashraf Hamid,
a 1974 Graduate of Riverdale. Affectionately known as "Hash"
to many of us, Ashraf was a well-liked, flamboyant figure
in the halls of Riverdale. It is a great tragedy that he died
so young. There is some comfort in the fact that he had realized
his life long dream of becoming a pilot. Ashraf died along
with 148 others in the crash of Flash Airlines Flight FSH604,
a Boeing 737 lost shortly after take-off from Sharm el-Shekh
airport in Cairo. The flight, bound for Paris, crashed into
the Red Sea on Saturday, January 3rd 2004. Anyone who has

I
remember a rather diminutive person with fire in his eyes.
Who came into our Gym Class did a head over Heels soccer kick
on a wooden floor no less. And proudly proclaimed his name
to be Hashraf! Hamid! and instanstly either Styrczula(sic),Vernic
or me gave him the name Hashie. I would like to think it was
me but I think it was Strych.
