scheduled for March 4, 2000
compiled and priced by Ron Cox
Hi, gang. I've managed to complete a second draft of the entire price guide for the March draft. So check it over when you get the chance. I will likely post this list in the next newsletter, just to give GMs a head start on the numbers. If we've missed someone or decide to alter the price on someone, we can still do that prior to the draft.
Note that there is a good reason to list only true MLB rookies in the rookie list and official minor leaguers in the minor league list, because of how each group affects team salaries. That is, SJL teams can draft all minor leaguers without affecting their team salary, even if the minor leaguers played briefly in the majors last year. But all players who qualified for rookie status last year will cost some amount of money. Thus the importance of the distinction, and why we have a slightly longer minor league listing than in the past.
Also I've taken the time to alphabetize the free veteran players list. After looking everything over, I must say we've done a good job enabling GMs to fill their roster needs for scoresheet, especially with the inclusion of the freebie players. No team need be deficient in starters or backups.

Free Agent Hitters: (80 x OPS) - (age reduction) - (career k/bb ratio x 2) = dollar figure x (plate appearances/400 for players with fewer than 400 PA) x OPS = final dollar rating.
Free Agent Pitchers: 100 - [(10 x ERA) + (100 x Opp. Bat. Avg.)] t [(k/bb ratio x 5) + (.05 x IP)] = dollar figure x (.01 x IP for pitchers with fewer than 100 innings) x [(h + bb per 9 innings - 9 x 2)] = final dollar figure.
Rookie Hitters: (OPS x 40) - (k/bb ratio) + (15 if A prospect) = dollar figure x (plate appearances/400 if fewer than 400 PA) x OPS.
Rookie Pitchers: 100 - [(12 x ERA) + (120 x Opp. Bat. Avg.)] + [(k/bb ratio x 3) + (.05 x IP)] = dollar figure x (.01 x IP for pitchers with fewer than 100 innings) - (h = bb per 9 innings -9) = final dollar rating.
Note that in the case of A prospects, I also considered minor league performance where appropriate. [Ron's 1999 note]
Minor League Prospects: These players were priced according to the standards of earlier drafts, using the standards developed in Bill James's Player Ratings books of 1993-1995. As the constitution explains, only those prospects rated as B- or better who played above A ball get prices. In the absence of the STATS Minor League Scouting Notebook we used previous draft standards to gauge which players to price. Other minor-league prospects are either free (if they had no more than 30 AB or 15 IP above A ball) or $5 (if they played in AA or AAA but not in the majors).[RS]
