2001 Shoeless Joe League Minor League Reports
October, 2000
compiled by Ron Cox and Dan Skidmore-Hess
The following reports continue the methodology of the last two years. We evaluate minor leaguers from each SJL organization and grade them on this scale:
A: Outstanding player with a chance to be a major league star
B: Good player with a chance to be an everyday player in the minors
C: Average minor leaguer with a slight chance to play in the majors.
D: Mediocre minor leaguer, journeyman, waiver fodder.
We also grade each organization's overall farm system, based on its top current prospects and the overall depth of the farm system. The rankings reflect the understanding of player development skills that are included in past editions of the Stats Minor League Scouting Notebook, with special attention to statistics from the Stats Minor League Handbook. The most important considerations for hitters include age, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, overall tools and park effect. For pitchers, strikeout-to-walk ratio is important, as is ERA, hits plus walks divided by innings pitched, age and park effect.
In order to be included in the minor league ranking, a player must have played the majority of his games at the minor league level in 2000 OR hitters must have had at least 150 atbats at the minor league level and pitchers must have thrown at least 50 innings (barring injury). Organizations are graded based on current minor league prospects, not based on minor leaguers that were already full-time major leaguers in 2000.
