Hobgoblin Drafts
2009 1. John Lannan, 24, SP 3. Brad Zeigler, 29, RP 5. Cedric Hunter, 21, CF 6. Clayton Richard, 25, SP 7. Everth Cabrera, 22, SS 8. Dillon Gee, 23, SP 9. Mark Hallberg, 23, IF 10. Ramon Hernandez, 33, C 2008 4. Jared Goedert, 22, 3B 5. Jose Martinez, 19, OF 7. Brian Rike*, 22, OF 8. Michael McKenry, 23, C 9. Josh Flores, 22, OF 2007 4. Dana Eveland*, 23, SP 5. Enrique Gonzalez, 24, SP 5. Scott Feldman, 24 RP 6. Sergio Pedroza*, 23, OF/C 7. Wilkin Ramirez, 21, 3B 8. Emerson Frostad*, 24, C 9. Hector Ambriz, 23, SP 10. Cory Dunlap*, 23, 1B Comment: Hope we did okay despite lousy draft position. Blew our draft plan by selecting the expensive Gonzalez, leaving us with no money to take who we wanted later. Ended up with a bunch of A-ball prospect we really hadn't studied. Estatic to get young lefty Eveland. Gonzalez can still work out. Feldman can give needed innings in the pen. Intrigued by Pedroza's power and Frostad's stats. Don't hold out much hope for Ramirez and Dunlap, but the former is young and has tools, the latter excellent strike zone judgement and may hit better out of the FSL. 2006 3. Etanislau Abreu, 22, 2B 4. Welinson Baez, 21, 3B 4. Yovani Gallardo, 20, P 6. John Jaso, 22, C 7. J.P. Howell, 23, LP 8. Ronny Paulino, 25, C 9. Kevin Kouzmanoff, 24, 3B 10. Pablo Sandoval, 19, 3B 11. Anthony Raglani, 23, OF Comment 2007: Awesome draft thus far. Love Paulino and Kouz in 8th/9th rounds. Dosen't get any better than that. Gallardo blossomed into a top 20 prospect. Still very high on Tony Abreu even though Sickels rates him a C+. Howell can still develop into a back-of-the-rotation lefty. Giving Jaso another year - he will only be useful if he sticks at C. Also got Chris Duffy in an illegal in- draft trade! Baez just stikes out too often. Sandoval a disappointment. 2005 2. Clint Barmes, 26, SS (from NO) 2. Mike Gonzalez*, 27, RP 3. Ramon Antonio Pena, 23 SP 4. Alex Romero#, 21, OF 5. Terry Tiffee#, 26, 3B 6. Nelson Cruz, 23, OF 6. Mike Reed, 19, C 7. Sean Tracy, 24, SP 8. Brian Bruney, 23, RP Comment 2007: An okay draft thus far. Barmes was a need pick, had no one at second at the time. Gonzalez solid. Released Pena 2 months too early, should have seen what he could do in the pen. Jury still out on Romero. Nelson Cruz a great pick up for the 6th rd. Bruney could still make this a good draft.2004 1. Dontrelle Willis*, 22, SP 2. Jeremy Guthrie, 25, SP 3. Jason Davis, 24, SP 5. Yadier Molina, 20, C 6. Kyle Davies, 20, SP 7. Chris Gruler, 19, SP 8. Drew Meyer, 22, SS 9. Josh Rupe, 22, SP Comment 2007: Dontrelle with the 2nd overall pick. Guthrie was a panic pick and not a good one. Was pleased to get Yadier but traded him for 6 weeks of Jason Schmidt for 2006 playoff run. Will miss him. Unloaded Davies in the Dunn deal. Should have stuck with Rupe longer. Traded him to Savannah for very little, as I recall.
2003 1. Hideki Matsui*, 28, OF 2. Jose Contreras, 31, SP 2. Scott Kazmir*, 20, SP 2. Kaz Ishii*, 29, SP 3. Ramon Vazquez*, 25, SS 3. Chad Tracy*, 23, 3B 4. Yorvit Torrealba, C, 5. David Bell, 30, 3b 6. Francisco Liriano*, 20 SP 7. Jose Bautista, 22, 3B 8. Reggie Abercrombie, OF, 22 Comment 2007: Awesome draft. Godzilla with the overall first pick worked out okay. Contreras and Kazmir in the second round! Tracy in the third. Liriano and Bautista late. Traded Kazmir and Liriano in the Tejada deal. Matsui went with Phillips, Davies and Broussard for Dunn.
2002 1. Mark Teixeira#, 21, 3B 2. John-Ford Griffin, 22, OF 3. Ken Harvey, 1B 3. Esteban German, 2B 3. Matt Smith*, SP 5. Ronnie Merrill, SS 5. Sean Henn*, SP 6. Corey Slavik, 3B Comment 2007: Terrible. Other than Tex with the second overall pick. Was angry that FTL went back on their promise and took Prior instead of Tex, but it obviously was for the best. Will forever despise JF Griffin and his "sweet left-handed swing". Recently snagged Esteban G. off waivers as a useful backup.
2001 1. Adam Piatt, OF 1. Bud Smith*, SP 2. Donnie Bridges, SP 3. Brett Myers, SP 4. Scott Hodges*, 3B 4. Travis Hafner*, 1B 5. Marlon Byrd, OF 6. David Gil, SP 6. Lyle Overbay*, 1B 7. Ricardo Rodriguez, SP 8. Chance Caple, SP 9. Mauricio Lara, SP 10. Chris Amador, 2B Comment 2007: First draft. Piatt was a big mistake and we suspected as much at the time. My other choice was Buehrle, but I didn't want too much pitching!!! Hard way to learn a lesson. Poor old Bud Smith. Had success and threw a no-no as a rookie, but then three shoulder surguries. Bridges also had arm trouble, Myers was foolishly traded away for Ben Broussard. Hodges ended up with some horrible disease. Was estatic to get Hafner at the time, even moreso now! Couldn't believe Byrd was still there in rd 5, but he has been a major disappointment, especially after his decent rookie year. Gil reached AA. Overbay also dealt in the awful Broussard deal! Rodriguez did make the majors only to disappoint.
