Politics Makes Strange Bedfellows, and I Wish I Could Rent the Video
I didnt watch any part of the recent political conventions. Who really wants to watch a bunch of people dress funny and shout Yay, us! Boo, you!? Besides, Husker football season isnt that far off.
But I do have to wonder: Do the Bushes (gotta love that name) have a first name in the family other than George? Or are they following Mr. Foremans lead?
While I am voting this fall, Im not voting for Bush, Gore or even Nader. Nope, my vote is going to Tricky Dick (gotta love that name too). Nixon: less stiff than Gore, more human than Bush.
In Nebraska, Im sure youve heard about the DOMA. Its the Defense Of Marriage Act, and is aimed at constitutionally outlawing same-sex marriages in the state. (As if any marriages have sex in them.) While you may think its a forgone conclusion that this will pass in this ultra-conservative state, keep 3 things in mind:
1. I agree with you. It probably will pass.
2. Wouldnt it be really cool if it didnt pass by a landslide? Wouldnt that just surprise the Hell out of sooooo many people? Wouldnt you love to gloat over that schmuck at the office who was soooo sure everyone would vote for it?
3. If I remember my state government class correctly, since its a constitutional amendment, even if it gets approval from voters, it still has to be accepted by state senators. With a close vote, I think a few lawmakers would think twice about blindly accepting it.
Across the river, in Iowa, Governor Tom Vilsack is under fire from Republican legislators for issuing an executive order protecting state workers from discrimination based on sexual preference, or orientation. (And you thought Iowa was backward.) Way to go, Gov! Unfortunately, hes fighting a lawsuit from those lawmakers who say he overstepped his constitutional authority. As if thats the issue. As if they would have gladly signed on had someone introduced a bill promoting the same.
In other news
Ever see one of those signs protesters tend to take to gay pride parades that read God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve? I want to make bumper stickers that read God created Adam, and God created Steve, but it was Eve who introduced them.
And on one final note: they say we should not have specific laws singling us out for special protection, i.e. anti-discrimination laws, because what we do is by choice. Ignore for a moment that none of us choose to be who we are. (Yeah, Mom. I chose to be a social outcast, because I want to be the target of violence and ridicule.) And the next time someone tells you that, point this out: Religion is a choice, yet its covered under the Bill of Rights.
