Hello; I just surfed on looking for photos of marine raiders, mostly of the 1st. My uncle was in the 1st raider battalion and was KIA on Tulagi 7 Aug 1942. No one in my fathers family talked much about him. I was given his name for my middle name and I have alwa s been proud of it. There is a web site for the marine raiders, a good site too. I have been trying to find anyone who may have served with my uncle and knew him. His name was Elmer Speicher,(A) company 1st Marine Raiders.

Hi Marine, My father served in the Solomon Islands with the Army and was in the invasion of the Treasury Islands (near Bougainville) Oct. 27, 1943; part of the Northern Solomons campaign. While staging on Guadalcanal for training he met a 1st Marine Raider who told im the story of how they were abandoned by the Navy during the first weeks of the Guadalcanal invasion and the terrible hardships & casualties they suffered (90% he claims - is this true?). He told my Father a story which I have never seen anywhere. He c aims that Gen. MacArthur landed at Henderson Field sometime during the campaign in a C-47. The Raiders were so outraged at the way they were used and left so long without reinforcements that they fired on MacArthur as he stepped off the plane. He stepped ack into the plane, the door closed and it took off. He said no-one was seriously punished because of the publicity it would generate and because they had been through enough. Was this story told to my Father a "tall tale" or a true story? Do you know any hing of this or can you put me in touch with someone who would know. Is there a veterans group for the 1st Marine raiders? If its true its quite a story. Could the story be true but some other General? My Father believes the Marine and said he was very incere and they talked for a long time. Please let me know. I hope that Americans never forget the sacrifices you veterans made during WWII. Sincerely, Jay Millman

I'm looking for advice on how to obtain info on my grandfather's service in WWII, Pacific Theater as a Marine. How would I find out what unit he was with? Can I find out where he was & when? I am very involved in genealogy but embarrasingly ignorant of the military aspect of my family's history. Just in case, his name was Wilson Roy Buchanan, also known as "Bill" or "Buck". He survived the War and lived in his native Mississippi til his death. Any suggestions? Any are welcome! Thanks much!

Thanks for the information I found while visiting your site. My Father, George A. Moody, (also known as "Red" due to his flaming red hair), was a Marine from 1940 to 1946, and served on Guadacanal. I am searching for anyone who served with him during th Pacific campaigns. My Father passed away in 1988, and I recently obtained an incomplete copy of his military records. The records indicate the only campaign he participated in was Guadalcanal. However, he was with the 2nd Division, 6th Marines, Headqu rters in 1941,on Iceland in early 1942. The family and I believe he was in the Tarawa campaign and several other Pacific battles. My Father did not talk much about his war experiences, other than to say many of his friends were killed on Tarawa. He served with another Marine named Joe Cuelum, and his 1st Sergeant was named Jago, who was killed on the way into the beach on Tarawa while still in the landing boat. I believe he was on Okinawa because when I was there in 1974 he told me to stay away rom Henoko village because so many of the inhabitants had died during the war there it would likely be dangerous. If anyone reads this who has any knowledge of my Father, please let me know. Dad was a Warrant Officer during most of the war, and held the permanent rank of Paymaster Sergeant. Thanks, for everything, Stephan B. Moody, Corporal, USMC, 1974-76. Semper Fidelis!!!

I would like to include quotes from Marines that were on Guadalcanal. Would you mind sending me your view of the movie, if you have time? And could I use some of your history from your web page to go along with your quote. This will only be seen by the teacher and will NOT be used to make a profit. Hi! I have been doing some research on Marshall Ulysses Trimble, b. Sep. 25, 1847 and d. Feb. 15, 1912 in Princeton, Illinois. He was an attorney in Princeton, Illinois and married Sallie Thomson - they had five children, one of which is my great-grandmo her Louise. In some handwritten notes of my grandmother's I find the name Judge Harvey Marion Trimble with birth/death dates matching your Harvey Marion Trimble and the same spouse and five children, one being Winfred K. Trimble. I also find a note about Mathew Trimble and Lydia Thatcher which possibly indicates they are Harvey's parents (it isn't quite clear what grandma meant with her arrows, etc.). Anyway, I was wondering if this family is somehow connected to Marshall Trimble that I am searching for - do you have this name anywhere in your files? Thanks so much! Dear Don, My Father and I visited Guadalcanal last July. I had read about the "lost" patrol and was interested to read that you had in fact located the patrol, contrary to all other written accounts. I do not know if you have ever been back to Guadalcanal in later years, but unfortunately the island is now degenerating into an ethnic civil war. We were probably two of the last tourists to look around - and even we were restricted to a small "secure" area between Alligator creek and Pt. Cruz as the "rebels" had control of the emainder of the island. I am enclosing four photos of the Matanikau area that were taken last July: The Matanikau sandbar and surrounding area was filled with a shantytown of Gilbertese migrants and we were soon accosted by unsavoury characters so we did not linger long. I took a picture of the top of a Japanese tank turret that is barely visible above the waves. This is one of the tanks that was knocked out on the sandbar. I also took a couple photos from the Matanikau bri ge (where Mendana Avenue, the main road, crosses over the river). One view looks downstream towards the sandbar, the other view looks upstream. I gather that this is where you waded upstream. Do you still recall, after so many years, where your scout group found the Goettge patrol, say, in relation to the mouth of the river? The fou th picture is taken through a dirty plane window as we flew by the Matanikau valley - the sandbar is just visible between the first and second boat from the right. We also took photos (which I haven't scanned in) of what we believed to be the ridge "Vayay " where the Japanese had set up to ambush the patrol - this area is all built up and forms part of the capital, Honiara. Best regards, Dennis Letourneau Montreal, Quebec, Canada 5/10/00 (Thanks, Dennis. Forwarded to Ruthadele and Don on 8/31/00. MariaPia)

After reading over many of the guestbook comments I noticed a recurring theme of, "He never talked much about his experiences during the war." Some may gain some insight to combat experiences by reading either "The Good War" by Studs Terkle or "Citizen S ldier" by Stephen Ambrose. Both are oral histories that have been collected from WWII vets. Although a particular father or grandfathers story may not be told in these books, their children or grandchildren may get a better idea of what their vets went hrough. May father was aboard a cruiser during WWII and he too did not ever talk much about his combat experiences. However he had a few humorous "sea stories" that he would role out on occasion. One had to do with the Marine detachment that was assigned to his crusier, USS Boise, in the earlier part of the war. The Boise had been involved in a night battle of Cape Esperance, near Gaudalcanal, in October 1942. The ship had been badly damaged and was sent to Australia for temporary repairs before she was to be ent back to the U.S. The crew enjoyed a good deal of liberty and frequented a local beach. The story goes that it seems that some of the Marines had been told that if they added certain ingredients to a coconut and buried the cocnut in the warm sand to erment that they would come up with some sort of "beverage" with a kick. However the Marines of the Boise detachment were sent off to Guadalcanal before they could harvest they home made hooch. And apparently they hadn't told anyone else of their effort Some time goes by and one day at the beach where the crew was enjoying liberty... ...the beach started to erupt. My father said that at first they all thought the Japanese fleet was shelling the beach. It turned out that the fermenting cocnuts ha reached critical mass all about the same time. My father said the by the number of cocnut explosions taking place on the beach those Marines must have harvested most of the coconuts on the entire beach. What servicemen will do to quench a thirst! I was surfing & ran across you webpage. I have been looking for any Marines that knew my dad, Cpl. Joe Malley Hendrix. I read your diary but you were stationed in different places than my dad. I just wanted to thank you for sharing your remembrances with those of us who are interested in it. May God bless you! Donna

Hi Don! i'm originally from Ba, Fiji which is a northern sugar cane growing area on the main island of Viti Levu. I have heard a lot about American soldiers camping in the area and fighter planes carrying out 24 hour patrols. Apparently the Japs were abou to land. I would love to know more. Can you help?

Hello Ruth: Just visited your web site and must say you did a fantastic job. From your family tree I see that you go back to Harvey Trimble. His Father, Mathew, was a brother to my Great, Great Grandfather, Enoch Trimble. I have a good history on Mathew and also the Dakins that tie in with us. Do you have any of this info? If not, I will be glad to share info I have. Cliff Trimble

You have a great website that I hope my father will be able to visit. He was with the 1st Marines Amphibious Tractor Division making landings on New Britian, Bouganville, and other islands as well. He never speaks much about the war, and I could never bla e any of the men and women who experienced it. I hope to have my parents computer up and running over the holidays. How would I go about finding my fathers division members that may still be alive. I would appreciate any help. Thanks again and happy holid ys. John Barley Palm Beach Gardens, Fl. One of the most important people in my life and one of my best friends was in m/3/5 1st Marine division from Sep.20 1941-45. He fought in the first three campaigns of the division before being wounded on Pelilue in 1944. One of the reasons I made it throu h law school was because of this man. I would love to hear from anyone who was in the Marines with him. His name was Hiriam Hogg and was a pfc his entire tour (was just a little roudy). From one who came from a different generation, I would like to thank all of those valiant young men who fought and sometimes died for all generations of Americans. My appreciation can never equal their sacrifice, but Thank YOU.
