"Where is my Marlboro man, where is his shiny gun,
where have all the cowboys gone? " I've chatted with lots of rodeo athletes and
numerous ranch hands and horse breeders out west. They keep telling me that there
are no real cowboys east of the Mississippi River. I say, BULL! Sure I live in
Pennsylvania, but we've got our fair share of rodeo stock contractors. We have High School
rodeos, PRO PBR Tours, APRA and AFR, heck, I've even heard rumors of a gay rodeo
chapter. We're also surrounded by the Amish and Mennonites who use horses almost
every day of their lives. In fact the blacktop road I live on has a nice little horse
breeding operation going on. I've seen a cowboy go right past my mailbox giving a pretty
girl a ride. One of the ladies that works at the Video Junction in Selinsgrove was talking
about her horseback riding over the Battlefields at Gettysburg PA. And one of the
young gentlemen that works there also mentioned riding horses. You'd be surprised
how many times I come out of work and find a pickup truck with a horse trailer parked in
our back lot. And even our local WalMart gets cowboys at all hours of the morning.
So, hey, we do too have cowboys back east. Just around here we don't call those that
raise and sell beef cattle ranchers so much as farmers. |
