Playing with Trains releases Stress |

This brings up another aspect of modeling railroading that most serious modelers try to avoid. I saw a two paneled cartoon once that showed what happens to all those millions of train sets sold each Christmas. They start out with a little oval of track and the guy playing with it is pretty happy. But a few months later, with the train going around and around and around and around soon the fun wears off and the whole train thing becomes too boring and thats the end of that. The second cartoon showed this train which had gone around the same oval so many times that it wore a deep grove into the platform underneath. But for me, one of the most relaxing things is to sit back in an easy chair, with the TV off and the lights out or very low, only the soft glow of that pretty plastic village to chase the demons away, and every minute like clockwork a train goes passing by. It relaxes me so much I start to nod off to sleep. I know if I had a bad day at school or even when I started my first real job, when I was really stressed out and couldnt sleep, Id go to wherever my layout was at the time (attic, basement, living-room, alongside my bed) and run the trains and just let them relax me until I was sleepy. I always slept good after that. |
