Model railroading in the one of best hobbies in the world because of all it has
to offer. Most parents these days dont give toy trains much thought. But when you
think about all that can be learned from playing with them, youd think more people
would get there kids involved in building a layout. You develop skills like carpentry,
basic electricity, use math skills with measuring, drafting gets involved as you use graph
paper to draw your layout blueprints, then there is all the different arts and crafts
involves - working with paints, glues, plaster, and so on, you get outdoors as you search
for different kinds of weeds that can be dried and used to make trees and shrubbery,
reading and following directions to assemble kit houses and rolling stock, there is lots
of history surrounding the time period your railroad is theme'd after (the wild west of
the early 1800s, the steam to diesel period of the early 1900s, perhaps
youre layout is set in the year 2210 on the surface of the moon or some other planet
- talk about using ones imagination!!!!), and then theres the whole railroad thing
itself with learning whistle codes and signaling, planning time schedules to run your
trains by, youve got public planning and urban development - should we put a factory
here or a public park, what about a playground next to the school and a movie theater
right in the middle of town. Take it outdoors and you can add gardening and landscaping,
not to mention adult entertaining - a cocktail car filled with drinks to be delivered to
the pool....This is one hobby that the whole family can work on together.
