LVMPD's First Female Deputy Chief
Terry Lesney was appointed to deputy chief on October 30, 1999. Chief Lesney is the first woman to be appointed deputy chief and is one of only four women in the history of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department to be promoted to captain. She joined the police department in September of 1981, and quickly distinguished herself as a very capable and personable police officer. She rose through the ranks garnering valuable experience in primarily line operations.
In 1996 she was promoted to captain and assumed command of the Southeast Area Command (SEAC), the largest of the five area commands with close to 200 personnel. SEAC encompasses the Las Vegas Strip and covers the largest geographic area of the area commands.
In 1998 she was asked to take command of the then newly formed Gang Investigations Bureau, and in 1999 she took command of the Vice/Narcotics Bureau.
Chief Lesney is a member of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce. She is the past chairperson of the Z� program (Zero Weapons/Zero Tolerance in Our Schools). She has served as a cultural awareness and ethics instructor and has participated in numerous committees throughout the police department.
Chief Lesney graduated from the Southern Police Institute in 1992 and the Northwestern Staff and Command College in 1996. She holds an associate degree in criminal justice from the Community College of Southern Nevada and is currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in criminal justice at UNLV.
