Pre-1950 Badges of Las Vegas

These badges are in the collection of Southern Nevada Police Historian Ron Donoho, and the information accompanying them is a product of his many years of research. Our special thanks to Mr Donoho for his gracious authorization to use the pictures and material here.

This is the first badge issued to officers of the Las Vegas Police Department circa 1911. It was manufactured by the Salt Lake Stamp Company and bears its hallmark.
This badge was worn by LVPD Officer Earnest May when he was killed in the line of duty in 1933. Notice the ominous badge number 13. These badges were manufactured by the Los Angeles Stamp and Stationary Company and bear its hallmark.
Frank Wait was the Chief of Police of Las Vegas from 1914 to 1927, and again in 1936. After finishing this assignment, he was appointed by Sheriff Gene Ward to be his Undersheriff. This badge was manufactured by George Schenck and bears its hallmark.
This badge was presented to LVPD Chief Dave Mackey by W. A. Ferris on November 15, 1941. Mackey was Chief from 1935 to 1937, and again from 1941 to 1942. The badge was manufactured by the Los Angeles Stamp and Stationary Company and bears its hallmark.
This badge was worn by LVPD Chief Don Borax (pronounced Borae). He was the Chief from 1942 to 1943. The badge was also manufactured by the Los Angeles Stamp and Stationary Company and bears its hallmark.
Chief Borax was injuried in an attempt to foil a jail break and could no longer function as the police chief. He was appointed as the agency's first Inspector in 1943. This was the last badge worn before the silver 7-point star that was worn until the PD consolidated with the Clark County Sheriff's Office in 1973. It was manufactured by George Schenck and bears its hallmark.
This badge is added for interest. It was worn by Chief Probation Officer "Moon" Mullin in Clark County before becoming a Municipal Court Judge. This was manufactured by Los Angeles Stamp and Stationary Company and was probably worn in the 1960's. Judge Mullin was an early African American leader in Las Vegas.
