The Hungarian Air Force in Barbarossa

A Preliminary Look

In addition to the Mobile Corps (Gyorshadtest) provided by Hungary during Operation Barbarossa a rather small air contigent was contributed to support the Mobile Corps under the grandiose title of the Air Force Brigade (Repülö Dandár). This consisted of the following units:

4/O. Onálló-századok (Independent Squadron) of 8 Ju 86K and 8 Ca.135bis/U bombers. (formed from 4/II. Bombázó-osztály (Bomber Group))
1/3. Vadász-század (Fighter Squadron) of 12 CR.42 fighters.
A number of reconaissance units were also committed, but are essentially irrelevant.

A number of other units supported the intitial stages of the campaign, but never left Hungary. These included, as best as I can figure: 3/5. Bombázószázad (Bomber Squadron) with 8 Ca.135bis/U bombers
The rest of the 4/II. Bombázó-osztály with Ju 86Ks
2/3. Vadász-század with 9 or 12 CR.42s.
As well as the usual reconaissance units.

On 7 August a small experimental flight of 6 or 7 fighters was detached from the 1/2. Vadász-század in Hungary to gain combat experience with the new Re 2000s being phased into service.

As best I can tell these were the only reinforcements or replacements received by the Repülö Dandár in 1941. It seems to have been withdrawn in stages beginning in October '41, but had completely returned to Hungary by December. 1
