Notes for ALONZO AARON HALL:

Taken from Ancestors and Descendants of the Hall-Poff Family of Montgomery County, Virginia by Judith Scott Self c. 1978:

"...his parent's nicknamed him "Lonzy" as this is the name appearing for him on both the 1880 County Census reports and on the 1880 Federal Census reports. He was reared in the Alleghany Magisterial District klying south of McAdams Road. His childhood home is still inhabited, though altered in appearance from it's original white clapboards, hand-hewed in Montgomery County, to it's present overlay of "formstone".

When Alonza reached maturity, he went to West Virginia to work in the caol mines. Many young people at this time did the same, saving their hard earned wages and returning home when they had accumulated enough to purchase property in the area in which they had been reared. Such was Alonza's intent. Unfortunately, he was early struck in a mining accident during which the weight of tons of slate lamed and otherwise marked the quality of life he was to experience from this time onward. For many years he suffered; periodically, he had to return to hospitals for operations on his back which sporatically continued to abcess. His right foot was crushed in the accident; when healed, his toes overlapped. He thereafter limped the rest of his life because of these leg back and foot injuries."

"In October, 1903, Alonza bought land on the northeast foothiss of the beginning of the Alleghany Mountains...called Christiansburg Mountain."

Notes for SALLIE EUGENIA HALL:

From the Montgomery Messenger, clipped and preserved in her mother's family bible:

LETTER FROM RINALDO

"On our return from Christiansburg Wednesday evening last, we learned the sad news of the death of the little baby of Mr. and Mrs. Alonza Hall, whom we had visited the day previous. There is always the unspeakable comfort that arises from the thought that the blood of Jesus Christ, undoubtedly saves everyone who is called away in infancy. But - O! the pain at the heart of the parents and loved ones when they have to give them up. This was one of the sweetest and most attractive children we have ever heard of. It was peculiarly bright and affectionate to it's parents, clinging to it's father and petting him whenever he came near, and when the dread disease caused her to become unconcious of her father's presence the trial was almost more than human nature could endure. In spite of the universal dread of the dire scourge that now afflicts our country, a large number of devoted friends assembled at the graveyard, on the land of the grand-parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. M. D. Halls' on the McAdam road, and your writer, assisted by Mr. Charles Howery sung a few appropriate hymns and spoke a few words of sympathy, love, and warning, ere the precious klittle one was laid to rest.eldom have we seen so sweet and lovely an expression on any human countenance, but we know she is a cherub now, one of the bright gems around the thrown of God in heaven.

We have always been peculiarly attached to this family, and we earnestly pray that this sore trial may be the means in God's hands of the salvation of the father, one of our most valued friends. O! Lord, in Thy mercy and love, bless and comfort them all, is our prayer.

RINALDO"
