The origins of my Runyon line began in the 15th century with the exodus of thousands of Huguenots to America and Protestant regions of Europe. Vicent Runyon was born in or near Portiers, Ancienne Poitu, France. He came to the New World, specifically the Isle of Jersey, in 1668 seeking refuge from religious prosecution. In the "First Settlers of Piscataway, New Jersy", the author, Orra Eugene Monnet, has this to say about Vincent:

"Vicent Rongnion, Hugyenot, most strikingly illustrates the French Protestant origins, the religious schism in France, and the expatriation sacrifices, and the struggle for human freedom in a new enviornment, with meritorious distinction, which gave vital effect to and influence upon the new civilization in a new world. He was the sole head of a new race, whose progeny with every French attribute, intermarried and diffused itself through thousands of early New Jersy people.

"He oringinated in or near the City of Poitiers, in the Province of Ancienne Poitus, France. He came in 1668 to the Isle of Jersey, He first settled in Elizabeth Town where he was a Carpenter; He married Anne Boutcher, alleged English woman. Coming from Herts, England who in reality was Anne Bouchierre, originally French."

Notes on VincentRongnion:

Vincent Rongnion was born in 1645 in or near the city of Poitiers, in the Province of Ancienne Poitou, France.

The identity of Vincent Rongnion's father has never been documented. A Henry Rongnion of Portiers, France has been suggested as the possiable father of Vincent, however, no proof has been found that our Vincent Rongnion was a direct descendant of Henry Rongnion. As such, the Coat-Of-Arms which has been used by some of the Runyon/Runyan families may or may not be correctly used. The Coat-Of-Arms belonging to Henry Rongnion (Other spellings: Roygnon,Regnon) is a blue (Azure) shield, with 3 bees of gold, with the motto Mel Regi. If Vincent is not a direct descendent of Henry, then the use of the Coat-Of-Arms is impropper.

Vincent Rongnion was a French Huguenot (French Protestants who in the seventeenth century were engaged in religious wars with the dominant Catholics, and were the followers of John Calvin.). The Huguenots were always a minority in France, but powerful with their strength centered in the southwestern part of the country. After Charles II of England was restored to the throne, he rewarded Lord Phillip Carteret, who had remained loyal to the Stuarts, and in his position as commander of the forces on the Isle of Jersey (Island off the coast of France where Huguenots went to escape the religious strife in their native land.), had offered refuge to the Prince. Charles' brother, the Duke of York, gave what is now New Jersey to Carteret and a fellow loyalist, Lord Berkeley.

Phillip Carteret as the new Govenor of New Jersey went to America in 1665 and several Huguenots from the Isle of Jersey accompanied him. That same year, he went back to Europe and returned in 1666, bringing more immigrants with him. It is beleived that Vincent Rngnion came to America from the Isle Of Jersey, with Phillip Carteret on a ship named the "Phillip", however his name has not as of this date been documented from records relating to the ship "Phillip". The "Phillip" was commissioned to support Phillip Carteret, the newly appointed governor of East Jersey, and was reportedly named after him. It brought Carteret and a number of French craftsmen to Elizabethtown, East Jersey, on or about 28 July 1665.

Vincent Rongnion first arrived at Elizabethtown, New Jersey between 1665 and 1668. He married Ann Martha Boucher at Elizabethtown on June 28, 1668, the marriage license given by Phillip Carteret. On March 20,1671-2 he purchased property from Francis Barber in Elizabethtown, the deed of sale stating "Francis Barber of Elizabethtown, planter, sells to Vincent Ronyon, 40 rods long by 16 rods wide, on the south side of the house lot of George Pack, fronting on the highway ...". Note the spelling of Vincent's name, three (3) years after his marriage it was already being americanized.

The stern Puritan element predominated in Elizabethtown, which made life unpleasant for Vincent, and he disposed of his property there and moved to the Baptist cammunity, at Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey. In the spring of 1677, he purchased a farm of 154 1/2 acres on the Raritan River where he raised his family. He was a carpenter and farmer.

Generation No. 2

2. JOHN VINCENT2 RUNYON (VINCENT1 RONGNION) was born 14 February 1668/69 in Elizabethtown, New Jersey, and died Bef. November 1744 in Rocky Hill, Somerset County, New Jersey. He married ELIZABETH DUNN 20 July 1692 in Piscaraway, Middlesex County, New Jersey, daughter of HUGH DUNN and ELIZABETH DRAKE. She was born 19 May 1675 in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, and died 1756 in Rocky Hill, Somerset County, New Jersey.

Notes for JOHN VINCENT RUNYON:

John Runyon was born 1669 in Elizabeth Town, New Jersey, and at the age of 6 or 7 years moved with his parents to Piscataway. On January 20, 1692 when about 23 years of age, he maried Elizabeth Dunn who resided in Piscataway. About 13 years later, he moved his family southwestward to Rocky Hill in the next county of Somerset, not far from his brother Thomas who lived near Hopewell. John and his brother Thomas became members of thr Baptist Church of Hopewell.

John Runyon died before November, 1744. We know his death was befor November, 1744 because the will of his brother-in-law, Samuel Dunn, dated November 9, 1744 refers to Samiel's sister Elizabeth as the "widow of John Runyon".

Children of JOHN RUNYON and ELIZABETH DUNN are:

9. i. MARTHA3 RUNYON, b. 30 July 1693; d. Bef. 1722.
10. ii. JOHN RUNYON, b. 18 November 1695, Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey; d. November 1745.
iii. JONATHAN RUNYON, b. 1697, Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey; m. RACHEL COMPTON; b. Abt. September 1738; d. 07 November 1801.
iv. SAMUEL RUNYON, b. 14 February 1698/99, Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey; d. 1745; m. SARAH HANNAH HILL.
v. NATHANIEL RUNYON, b. 1701, Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey.
11. vi. VINCENT RUNYON, b. 04 April 1702; d. 04 October 1749.
vii. BENJAMIN RUNYON, b. 16 June 1704; d. Abt. 1746, Somerset County, New Jersey; m. MARY UNKNOWN.

Notes for BENJAMIN RUNYON:

CAUTION - Several Current genealogies list this Benjamin with two wifes, a Mary ? and Anna Higgins. Accounts list Mary as a widow of and administrator of the estate of Benjamin, and also Benjamin on his death leaving by will to his wife "... Anna Runyan, all the goods she brought to me, and the profits of my plantation, to bring up those of my children that are under age,..."

It appears the records of two compleatly different Benjamin Runyon's have somehow been combined into one record.

A person can't die twice and have two different estates, so we have to be talking about two different Benjamin Runyon's, one who married Mary ?, who later became Mary Fish, and a second Benjamin who married Anna Higgins.

Benjamin Runyon son of John Vincent Runyon was the Benjamin who married Mary ?, and was born on June 16,1704 in Piscataway, Middlesex County, NJ., and died about 1776/7 in Somerset County, New Jersey.

The Benjamin Runyon (Runyan) who married Anna Higgins had to be born after 1704 because his will dated January 29, 1776 and proved February 12, 1776 left to his "...Wife Anna Runyan, all the goods she brought to me, and the profits of my plantation, to bring up those of my childern that are under age...". To have more than one child under age in 1776, we would have to estimate that this Benjamin was born between 1725 and 1738.

Notes for MARY UNKNOWN:

Information on this Mary wife of Benjamin Runyon seems to have originated from Page 627 of "First Settlers of Ye Plantation of Piscataway and Woodbridge" by Orra Eugene Monnette who says Benjamin left a Widow, Mary, who immediatly married William Fish, who died soon & then Mary immediatly married Joseph Furman. It has been shown that Monnette's work had many outright errors and inconsistencies.

Amali (Runyon) Perkins provided me with a xerox copy of information she had copied at Rutgers University concerning the estate of Benjamin, which supports Monnette's account of this Mary. The copied information says:

"1746-7, March 3, Runion (Runyon), Benjamin, of Somerset Co. Int. Inventory ... includes gun, sword and halbert, one white stallion. made by Zebulon Stout and Benjamin Rounsavall.

1747, Dec. 4. Bond of Mary Fish, of Somerset County, widow, as administratrix. James Clark, of New Windsor, Middlesex Co., farmer surety. Witness - William Coxe.

1756, April 19. Account of Josiah Furman and Mary his wife, late Mary Fish, and James Clark administrators of the estate..."

Notes for BENJAMIN RUNYON:

CAUTION - It has not been proved that Thomas Runyan and Martha Dunn had a son named Benjamin, however Geri Halstead in "Under the Runyon Tree" listed as additional childern: Benjamin, Anna and Elizabeth. Several published genealogies also list Benjamin as their son.

21. ix. JOHN RUNYON, b. 1739, Amwell, Somerset County, New Jersey; d. 27 July 1813.

6. MARY2 RUNYAN (VINCENT1 RONGNION) was born 02 July 1677, and died Abt. 1745. She married BENJAMIN DRAKE, son of JOHN DRAKE and REBECCA TROTTER. He was born 1683, and died 1763.

7. PETER2 RUNYON (VINCENT1 RONGNION) was born 01 July 1680 in Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey, and died October 1753 in Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey. He married PROVIDENCE BLACKFORD 12 October 1704, daughter of SAMUEL BLACKFORD and HANNAH SMALLEY. She was born 1683, and died 1759.

Notes for PETER RUNYON:

Peter Runyon died in October 1755. His will dated September 20, 1750, proved November 3, 1755, is abstracted in N.J. Cal. Wills (1751 - 1760), pages 276-277. The will of his widow, Providence was dated January 18, 1759, proved July 14, 1760, N.J. Cal. Wills, page 277.

It should be noted that the wills of Peter and Providence do not include several childern that are atributed in several publications as childern of Peter and Providence. Those childern not listed are; Sarah, John, Vincent, Rachel, Elizabeth, and Samuel. Baised upon the fact that these childern are not listed in eather will, CAUTION should be observed as to their parentage. ( Source: Harmon R. Clark, Jr., Runyon.rft, Page 7.)

Children of PETER RUNYON and PROVIDENCE BLACKFORD are:

i. JOHN3 RUNYON, b. 15 August 1705, Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey; m. PRUDENCE SMALLEY.

Notes for JOHN RUNYON:

John Runyon reportably married Prdence Smalley, but that may not be correct.

Marie Runyon Wright in the book "Up the Runyon/Runion/Runyan Tree" (Gateway Press 1993) says that John Runyon married a second wife named Anna Barefoot an "Indian maiden" about 1757. HOWEVER, THAT IS NOT CORRECT, AND FURTHER, THERE WAS NEVER A PERSON NAMED ANNA BAREFOOT.

This mis-information relating to the Indian Maiden named Anna Barefoot has been repeated as fact on several internet web pages and on commercial CD's with family Gedcom files, and as such the story will most likely come up for several years to come.

Little is known of John except that he was born 8/15/1705 in Piscataway, New Jersey. Some researchers list him as "John Sr." who moved to Rockingham County, VA befor 1753 and became an active member of the Linville Baptist Church, and served as Deacon at the church on several occasions. It is however unlikely he is the father of John Runyon, Jr. b. about 1765.

John was not included in the wills of Peter Runyon or Providence Blackford, leading some researchers to question if he was infact their son.

ii. GRACE RUNYON, b. 17 January 1705/06.
22. iii. JOSEPH RUNYON, b. 01 April 1710, Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey; d. 16 May 1760.

Harman R. Library, and GSNJ Special Collections at Rutgers University. ( It should be noted that Harman lists the parents of Isaac as John Runyon and Elizabeth Freeman, with caution. )

The western portion of Thomas' 200 acres of land passed to Ephraim Runyan after his fathers death.

Ephraim Runyan died in hopewell Twp., NJ as a result of an accident. There may have been a question about his death, because a coroners' inquest was held June 14, 1772 relating to his death:

From "More Records of Old Hunterdon County, Vol. 1", compiled by Phyllis B. D'Autrechy, 1998: (Further abstracted by me (Judy: ([email protected]))

Coroners' Inquest: Inquisition taken at the house of Ephraim Runyan in Hopewell Twp., 14 Jun 1772 to view the body of said Ephraim Runyon. Jury determined that he had been riding in a wagon on the road between Moses Baldwin's and Mary Kempbel's and fell. The two near side wheels of the wagon ran over him. He died about an hour after. (His name is spelled with an "a" and with an "o" in the transcription.)

After the death of Ephraim, his widow, Sarah remarried a widower named Jacob Stout. After Jacob's death she sold Ephraim's homestead farm to her daughter Martha's husband, William Dollas(Dawlis). In May 1786 William sold the property to Jacob Titus, who's family held the subject land until the year of 1975.

Notes for JOHN RUNYON:

CAUTION - Runyon/Runyan researchers should use caution in that much confusion exists as to the identity of the father of this John Runyan. The information on this Runyan line comes from sources which should be viewed by researchers with caution and as sometimes questionable. This line is based upon information from Page 159 of "Pioneers of Old Hopewell, with Sketches of her Revolutionary Heroes" By Ralph Ege, Runyon Family Group Sheets by Doris L. (Coriell) Horvath, and information which over the years appeared in Geri Halstead's "Under The Runyon Tree".

Ralph Ege in Pioneers of Old Hopewell page 159 says that this John Runyan was the son of Thomas Runyan and Martha Dunn. Thomas was born 1675 and John 1739, thus at John's birth Thomas would have been 64 years of age and his wife Martha would have been 58 years old - an unlikely age to have a child. The youngest documented son of Thomas & Martha was Ephrarm born 1710, 29 years before the birth of this John Runyan. John Runyan could however be the grandson of Thomas & Martha.

Page 159 of "Pioneers of Old Hopewell" by Ralph Ege says the following:

"John Runyan was the son of Thomas Runyan, who, in 1708, purchased of Daniel Coxe of Burlington, for thirty pounds, the tract now owned by Mr. Enoch A. Titus, adjoining the E. S. Wells farm on the south.

At that time William Hixson owned the Wells farm, and Captain Hunt the lands on the west.. A copy of the last will of Thomas Runyan, dated October 30, 1738, is on file in the office of the Secretary of State, at Trenton. He left the farm to his wife Martha, and appointed his two eldest sons, Vincent and Thomas*, executors. The witnesses to the will were his neighbors, Josiah and Elizabeth Furman and Roger Wolverton."

John Runyan married, first, about 1769, Rachel, daughter of James Hyde of Hopewell, who owned the farm east of the borough now known as the Johnson farm, when the road from the province line at Stoutsburg to marshall's Corner was surveyed on March 18,1723. (See article 2.) John Runyan and Rachel Hyde had nine children, viz:

Anna Elizabeth, who died in infancy, Sarah, Vincent, Orminer, Rachel, John Hyde, Joseph, Francis and Anna Elizabeth. John Runyan married, second, Rebecca Landis, and had five children, viz: Henry, Isaac, Catherine, David and Amos."

There's a notation *: "The wife of Adam Conrad of Kingwood, and mother of Judge Conrad, deceased of Pennington, was Sarah, daughter of Thomas Runyan, Jr., and she was left a legacy by the will of her father, dated January 23, 1770."

Several genealogies list a Benjamin Runyan born about 1717 and died 1749 as a son of Thomas Runyan and Martha Dunn. If that is correct, this John Runyan could be his son making him the grandson of Thomas Runyan.

Until further documentation is obtained, Runyon/Runyan researchers should consider that the father of this John Runyan is UNKNOWN.

43. ISAAC4 RUNYON (JOSEPH3, THOMAS2 RUNYAN, VINCENT1 RONGNION) was born 1738 in Middlesex County, New Jersey, and died 1820. He married CHARITY HAGEMAN 1754, daughter of ADRIAN HAGEMAN and MARY UNKNOWN.

Notes for ISAAC RUNYON:

As of the year of 1998, to my knowledge documented proof of the name of Isaac Runyon's Father & Mother does not exist.

According to Joe Branson, Provo, Utah who is a descendant of Isaac Runyan, "There has been no known link to Isaac's parents as his cabin burned and all the family records with it.". The source of his information is unknown. Amali (Runyon) Perkins has provided a copy of Isaac's handwritten Petition to be placed on the pension list, filed in the County of Tazewell, Virginia dated December 8th, 1819, and Isaac said ".... The precise period of service rendered in Carolina your petitioner cannot now recollect having been so unfortunate as to have all his papers and documents to substantiate the facts herein stated, consumed by fire. ...."

From "Supplement To Runyon Genealogy" by Robert Runyon, 1962, Page 195 - "Col. Calvin I. Kephart, an authority on the genealogy of the Runyon-Runyan families of New Jersey, in a letter to Amos Runyon of Belfry, Kentucky stated that Isaac Runyon who settled in Montgomery County, Virginia about 1780 was a son of Joseph who was born circa 1705. Joseph was a son of Thomas and Martha (Dunn) Runyon. No Substantiating evidence has been found." (E-mail I received indicates that "NJ Arch. XXIII pg 217" may be the source for documentation of Kephart's clams.).

About half of the published Runyon-Runyan trees I have seen list this Joseph Runyan as the father of Isaac.

A second theory states that Isaac's parents were John and Elizabeth (Freeman) Runyon. This John Runyon b. November 18, 1695, Piscataway,Nj was the son of John Runyan and Ann Elizabeth Dunn. The source for this theory appears to be Geri Halstead in "Under The Runyon Tree" stating "to my knowledge, no record of their (John Runyon& Elizabeth Freeman) children has been found" but she said it was "problematical and possible" that the children were 1) Freeman Runyon 2) Nathaniel Runyon 3) Jacob Runyon b. circa 1714 4) John Runyon b. circa 1723 5) William Runyon 6) Isaac Runyon 7) Hugh Runyon.

Without documentation, both theorys are nothing but speculation, and It may be that both are in fact in error. I have seen nothing which would give weight to one theory over the other. I will therefor carry Joseph Runyon, son of Thomas and Martha (Dunn) Runyon as Isaac's line until documented proof of another relationship can be produced.

From "Archives of The Pioneers of Tazewell County, Virginia" by Netti Schreiner-Yantis, Page 211, appeared this abstract of Isaac's petition for a pention. (It should be noted that this is not a "word for word reproduction" of the origional hand written document.)

"Isaac Runion - New Jersey, Virginia Petition made 08 Dec 1819. Bill drawn 20 Dec 1819.

Isaac served in the militia on several occasions during the Revolution and has never received but one dollar for his services. He first enlisted in New Jersey where he served two months. Next he served one month on the frontiers of Virginia under Captain Edwards. Then he served a tour to North Carolina in Colonel William Campbell's Regiment of Virginia Militia and lastly a tour in Captain Edwards Company in Colonel Walter Crockett's Regiment. Isaac's age now exceeds four score years and he has lost entire use of his eyesight. Addron Runion made oath that he knew Isaac served the tours mentioned. John Preston of Wythe County states that he first knew Isaac Runion in the year 1780. He then resided in Montgomery County on or near Pine Run. Mr. Preston saw Isaac in North Carolina a short time before the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, there were two men of that name, father and son, he thinks. About 14 or 15 years ago, Isaac Runion moved from Wythe to Tazewell County. John B. George deposes that he is well acquainted with Isaac Runion, that he is 81 years old and he understands he has been blind for 9 years. He also has a son who is a cripple, the son is about 50 years old. He also has an aged wife.

44. BENJAMIN4 RUNYAN (JOSEPH3 RUNYON, THOMAS2 RUNYAN, VINCENT1 RONGNION) was born Bet. 1725 - 1738 in Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey, and died Abt. February 1776 in Somerset County, New Jersey. He married ANNA HIGGINS. She died 23 February 1779.

Notes for BENJAMIN RUNYAN:

CAUTION: Their is much confusion as to the idenity of the father and mother of this Benjamin:

Several current genealogies have combined the data on this Benjamin with the data on Benjamin Runyon, son of John Vincent Runyon, resulting in a Benjamin who had two wifes, who died twice, and left two estates, which of course can't be. (See NOTES on Benjamin Runyon, son of John Runyon)

That DOB range would also seem to indicate this Benjamin could not be the son of Thomas Runyan and Martha Dunn.

From "Calendar of New Jersey Wills", Vol. V, 1771-1780, edited by A. Van Doren Honeyman:

1776, Jan 29. Runyan, Benjamin, of Amwell, Hunterdon Co.; will of. Eldest son, John, a colt. Wife, Anna Runyan, all the goods she brought to me, and the profits of my plantation, to bring up those of my children that are under age, and, after her death, the land to be divided between my 3 sons, John, Joseph, and Reuben. Daughters, Sarah, Elizabeth, Mary, Anna and Piety, 5 pounds each. Executors - wife Anna, and my brother-in-law, Azariah Higgins. Witnesses - John Manners, Joseph Stout, Samuel Corwine. Proved Feb. 12, 1776.

Inventory made by John Manners and Samuel Corwine, 7 Feb 1776 Account by Azariah Higgins, surviving Executor, 10 Mar 1781. (Lib. 17, p. 375; Lib 23, p. 218)

The will leaves to his eldest son, John, a colt, the rest of the estate went to Anna to take care of the underage childern. If we assume John was 20 years of age, and that Benjamin was 20 when he married Anna, Benjamin's DOB would be about 1736. If so, he could not be a son of Thomas Runyan and Martha Dunn. Many researchers listing a Benjamin as son of Thomas Runyan list his death at 1749, and if correct that can't be the Benjamin who married Anna Higgins.

Until further documentation is obtained, Runyon/Runyan researchers should consider that the father of this Benjamin Runyan who married Anna Higgins is UNKNOWN.

Children of BENJAMIN RUNYAN and ANNA HIGGINS are:

i. JOHN5 RUNYAN.
ii. JOSEPH RUNYAN.
iii. RUBEN RUNYAN.
iv. SARAH RUNYAN.
v. ELIZABETH RUNYAN.
vi. MARY RUNYAN.

45. VINCENT4 RUNYON II (VINCENT3, THOMAS2 RUNYAN, VINCENT1 RONGNION) died 1771. He married ELEANOR HUNT, daughter of EDWARD HUNT. She was born 1751, and died 08 January 1815.

Notes for ELEANOR HUNT:

Eleanor was only 16 years old when her child Vincent Runyan III was born. After the death of Vincent Runyan II, Eleanor married Philip Edington and lived on the land inherited by her son Vincent Runyan III, until 1800 when the property was sold to John Drake. Vincent Runyan III and the Edington family then moved to Washington, Cayuga County, NY which is in the Finger Lake Region of New York. In 1804 Seneca County was formed from Cayuga County, and in 1808 Washington was officially renamed Fayette.

46. JOHN4 RUNYON (VINCENT3, THOMAS2 RUNYAN, VINCENT1 RONGNION) was born 1725.

Notes for JOHN RUNYON:

CAUTION, several Runyan family genealogy files show that John Runyan born 1725 was a son of Vincent Runyan and Mercy Bonham Smith. It is noted that Vincent and Mercy did not become married until about 1745, and that Mercy was born circa 1726/7. If Vincent had a son named John born 1725, it would have had to be with his first wife Alise Curtis who married Vincent about 1720. If he was Mercy's son than his birth date must be wrong.

Lois Weatherwax Luehring does not show Vincent with a son named John, however she says records of Vincent and Mercy's "childern vary - some clame four children, others show four boys and some additional daughters".

Children of JOHN RUNYON are:

i. JOHN5 RUNYAN, b. 04 April 1747; d. 07 December 1807, Clarksburg, Virginia.

47. ABSOLAM4 RUNYAN (THOMAS3 RUNYON, JR., THOMAS2 RUNYAN, VINCENT1 RONGNION) was born 1736, and died 25 August 1809 in Baptistown, New Jersey. He married (1) UNKNOWN LAKE, daughter of WILLIAM LAKE. She died Bef. 1770. He married (2) WINIFRET JOHNSON. She died 1791. He married (3) ANN JOHNSON. She was born 1746, and died 29 August 1813.

Notes for UNKNOWN LAKE:

The will of William LAKE of Hunterdon Co, NJ mentions:

Grandchildren, Abner, Mary, Stephen and Ann RUNYAN, 10, when they are of age. Grandaughter, Mary, the daughter of my eldest son, William, a bed. Son, William, the remainder. Executors - son, William, and John Taylor, Jr. Witnesses - Jonas Thatcher, James Grahams, Lazarus Adams. Proved Nov. 8, 1775.1775, Oct. 31. Inventory, 797.3.2, made by John Sherrerd and Samuel Slater. Lib. 17, p. 255."

Notes for ANN JOHNSON:

It has been reported that Ann Johnson was the sister of Absolam's second wife Winifret.

However, one Runyon reseacher ( Judy - [email protected]) has uncovered information that may indicate that they were not sisters.

Judy said: "Winifret was the daughter of Cornelius Johnson and either his first wife Sarah BENHAM (b 1703) or second wife Ann (prob. STOUT). He was bapt in the Dutch Church on Staten Island, 20 Apr 1703. His first three children with Sarah Benham (Sara, Maria, and Rachel) were also baptised there, the last in 1728. Sometime after that, he and his family moved to NJ, and were in Amwell Twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ, by 1733.

In his will written 5 Mar 1770, Kingwood, Hunterdon Co., NJ, Cornelius named wife Ann; sons Jacobus, Cornelius, and Joseph; daughters Sara, Elizabeth, Mary, Rachel, Ann, Winifret, Johanna, and Rebecca; and grandson William. A stipulation to the will was that his estate was to be sold in one year. Exec: sons Jacobus and Cornelius. Wits: James Stout, Jacobus Johnson, Benjamin Johnson. The will was pro. 27 Apr 1770.

Edward C. Hoagland writes in "Twigs from Family Trees"....The uncertainty as to the jurisdiction of the Courts during the Revolutionary war was instanced by the petition of the legatees of Cornelius Johnson, presented to the General Assembly, 17 May 1777, asking the House to appoint some person to sell lands of his estate, there being no provision in the law at the time providing for such action. Special acts were then passed to act in such matters:

"House of Assembly, October 30, 1781. The petition from the legatees of Cornelius Johnson, late of Kingwood, in the county of Hunterdon, was read, setting forth that they had petitioned a former Assembly for leave to bring in a bill to amend certain deficiencies in the last will and testament of the aforesaid Cornelius Johnson, occasioned by the inaccuracy of the Clerk who wrote the said will, and praying that they may have leave to present a bill to amend the said deficiencies."

"Ordered, That the said petitioner have leave to present the draught of a bill, agreeably to the prayer of their petition, on advertising their intention in the New Jersey Gazette at least six weeks previous thereto. M. Ewing, jun. Clerk."

"Notice is hereby given, that the subscriber intends to present a bill at the next sitting of the Legislature, for the purpose mentioned in the foregoing extract. Cornelius Johnson, son of Cornelius Mar. 29, 1782 Signed by: Sarah Coolbaugh, Cornelius Johnson, Rachel Van Campen, Mary Brooks, Elizabth Barklow, WINIFRID RUNYAN, Joseph Johnson, Rebeckah Johnson, ANN JOHNSON, Johana Johnson."

Addendum to will abstract: In May, 1786, a citation was issued to Cornelius Johnson, surviving executor, to show cause why he has not filed an account. And 27 Oct 1786, Account filed by Cornelius Johnson.

As seen in the petition above, in 1782, Winifret Johnson was married to a Runyan and Ann Johnson was still unmarried."

He married ELIZABETH CORIELL 27 September 1788. She was born 05 March 1770 in Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey, and died 19 May 1860 in Piscataway, Middlesex County, New Jersey.

86. ADAM5 RUNYON (ISAAC4, JOSEPH3, THOMAS2 RUNYAN, VINCENT1 RONGNION) was born 04 May 1755 in Maryland. He married ELIZABETH DAVIS. She was born Abt. 1770, and died Aft. 1870.

Notes for ADAM RUNYON:

Nettie Weaver ([email protected]) has a copy of Adrian Hageman's last Will and Testament dated December 2, 1773 which provides for his two grandsons John Runnion and Adrean Runnion, but does not name Adam Runyon. Based upon that Will and the fact that Adam did not serve in the same military unit during the Revolutionary war as Isaac & John Runyon, she concludes that Adam is not a son of Isaac Runyon. Further, Nettie Weaver speculates that Adam may be a brother of Isaac sence there is only 17 years between their births.

On page 87 of "RUNYON GENEALOGY" by Robert and Amos Runyon 1955 they said "The relationship of John and Adam has never been determined, but a family connection is apparent." They noted that "While Adam was living in Stokes County, John Runyon was living in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Apparently John moved soon after 1790 to Tazewell County, where he is listed in the personal tax rolls. About the time that Adam emigrated to Pigeon Creek, John and his family came to Pond Creek, which is now in Pike County, Kentucky. Pond Creek is not far from Pigeon Creek."

By 1962 Robert Runyon had established in "SUPPLEMENT TO RUNYON GENEALOGY" that John and Adam were brothers, and that Adam Runyon was listed on the tax rolls of Tazewell County, Virginia for the years 1806 and 1811. On page 200, Robert reported that Adam Runyon's pension application No. R 9082, Scioto County, Ohio dated August 5, 1836 contained the following information...

"Adam Runyon was born May 4, 1755 in Maryland. He came with his parents to Rockbridge County, Virginia perhaps about 1778 or 1779. From there they soon removed to Botetourt County, Virginia. He enlisted in the Virginia Militia and made a tour to North Carolina. His residence was in Botetourt County, Virginia until about 1804 when he removed to Tazewell County. He lived about five or more years in Tazewell County and then he removed to Pigeon Creek, now in Mingo County, West Virginia. He lived on the waters of Pigeon Creek until April 15th or 16th 1835, then went to Scioto County, Ohio to reside."

Adam Runyon made application for a pension in Scioto County, Ohio in 1836. His descendants say that he later returned to Pigeon Creek, where he died and is buried.

From "Archives of The Pioneers of Tazewell County, Virginia" by Netti Schreiner-Yantis, Page 211

"Adam Runyon - Virginia

Applied for pension 05 August 1836 while a resident of Scioto County, Ohio. Age 81 years. Enlisted September 1777 in Botetourt County, Virginia under, he thinks, Lt. James Johnson. Marched to Hillsborough, North Carolina, Ranson's Mill, was in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, Battle of King's Mountain, and Yorktown. Born in Maryland and when very young was brought to Rockbridge County, Virginia by his parents where he lived until he enlisted. After service, he lived in Botetourt County for 15 years, then Tazewell County for about 4 years, then Cabell County until 16 April 1835/6 when he moved to Scioto County. He had applied for a pension about 9 years ago at which time Polly Demsey had made an affidavit in which she said she saw him enlist and march off. The affidavit was made in Logan County."

87. JOHN5 RUNYON (ISAAC4, JOSEPH3, THOMAS2 RUNYAN, VINCENT1 RONGNION) was born Abt. 1761 in Maryland, and died Aft. 1840 in Pike County, Kentucky. He married ELIZABETH RUNNER, daughter of ADAM RUNNER.

Notes for JOHN RUNYON:

Robert and Amos Runyan in RUNYON GENEALOGY 1955 listed that the name of John's wife was unknown but there was a tradition that her name was Betsy Raemer (spelling uncertain). Many published family trees list that name for John's wife.

The 1962 Supplement to RUNYON GENEALOGY by Robert Runyon states "John Runyan must have married in Montgomery County, Virginia, Where he was living, in or about 1786. The descendants of John Runyon say that his wife's name was Elizabeth." He further stated that the index for the records of Montgomery County, Virginia - Court Records 1776 - 1799 list the name of Elizabeth Runyon (spelled Runion) , but the actual documents have not been found. This suggests that John's Wife was named Elizabeth. According to Robert Runyon, census records indicate that Elizabeth was a few years older than John.

The book EARLY ADVENTURES OF THE WESTERN WATERS, VOL II, by Mary Kegley page 397 discusses Adam Runner living in Draper's Valley as early as 1786, on 230 acres of land on Mack's Run. (Montgomery County Deed Book A, P 402) The children of Adam Runner were mentioned in a lawsuit in Wythe County Superior Court Chancery Pleas which included "Elizabeth who Married John Runyan". (Lawsuit Smith v. Fugate. Wythe County Superior Court Chancery Pleas, Bk 5, beginning P. 669, Montgomery county Marriages.).

John was born in Maryland circa 1761 and died after 1840 at his son Adron's home in Pike County, Kentucky. Montgomery County Tax rolls list John and his father Isaac from 1782 - 1794, thereafter they moved to Wythe County for the years 1796 and 1797. John returned to Montgomery county by 1799. From 1800 - 1809 John was listed on tax rolls for Bluestone Creek, Virginia which became part of Tazewell County. John moved to Pond Creek, Floyd County, Kentucky circa 1820.

iv. CHARITY RUNYON, b. Abt. 1792.
Notes for CHARITY RUNYON:

Charity was an invalid, probably from birth. She is buried in the Pond Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

As recorded in Pike County, Kentucky, Circuit Court Order Book Number 1, page 2, July Term, July 1822, an order was entered, which stated that Charity Runyon, daughter of John was 30 years of age and appointed John Runyon, her father, as a committee to care for Charity. Pike County Circuit Book "A", page 81, May Term of Court, 1835 refers to Charity Runyon as being in care of Thomas Owens, and on page 134 of the same book she is placed in the household of her brother, Adron. She remained with Adron until her death.

Richard owned a large tract of land bordering the west side of New River in a portion of Montgomery County which became Pulaski County, Virginia in 1839. On May 10, 1837, Richard and wife Hannah, divided their land between two sons, giving the upper half to William and the lower half to Stephen. On May 1, 1837 Richard with his family were listed as residents of a part of Giles County that became Mercer County during the same year. He was one of the first grand jurors in the newly organized county. Richard is listed on the personal tax rolls of Giles County for 1853 to 1857. Also he was listed on the tax rolls for real estate in Giles County 1844 to the time of his death, and afterwards as his estate. His residence was given as being in Pulaski County. He had purchased during 1844 a tract of land located on Desmel Creek, fifteen miles southwest of Pearisburg containing 328 acres. By the year of 1846, his land holdings there were reduced to 110 acres.

Richard and Hannah (Carden) Runyon's childern were all married in Montgomery County, Virginia, except William, who was married in Wythe County.

Richard died at the residence of his son William in Pulaski County, Virginia. His death is registered on page nine in the Register of deaths at the County Clerk's office in Pulaski County. (Source: "Supplement To Runyon Genealogy" by Robert Runyon 1962.)

122. FREEMAN6 RUNYON (PHINEAS5, FREEMAN4, JOHN3, JOHN VINCENT2, VINCENT1 RONGNION) was born Abt. 1760 in Virginia, and died Bef. 26 March 1855. He married MARTHA SWAINEY 15 August 1798 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. She was born Abt. 1780 in Pennsylvania, and died 1850.

Notes for FREEMAN RUNYON:

Runyon family researchers should be cautioned that documented evidance has not been found to date that proves beyond dought that Freeman Runyon is a son of Phineas Runyon. Robert & Amos Runyon in their book "RUNYON GENEALOGY" 1955 and Robert's 1962 "SUPPLEMENT To Runyon Genealogy" list only 13 children of Phineas, and Freeman was not listed in their works.

Patty Barthell Myers in "Ancestors and Descendants of Lewis Ross Freeman" (State Historical Society of Wisconsin) stated that Freeman Runyon (ca 1720), son of John Runyon and Ann Elizabeth Freeman had a son named Phineas, b. 1742,d. 1831, m. Charity Coats b. c1747, who had 14 children, and that one of his grandsons was named Freeman.

The 1840 Barren County, Kentucky, Census shows that Freeman Runyon lived in that county at the same time as other children & descendants of Phineas, listing the following heads-of-families: Barefoot (1767), Charles (1798), Freeman (1760), James (1805), Isaac (1811), Joseph S. (1808), Thomas J. (1814), and Wilson (1802). James, Joseph S., and Thomas have been identified as sons of Freeman Runyon as evidanced by a deed from the heirs of Freeman to Joseph Nunn in March of 1855. Charles, Isaac, and Wilson are sons of Bafford "Barefoot" Runyon, son of Phineas Runyon.

The 1850 Barren County Kentucky Census lists Freeman Runyon and wife Martha as living with James Runyon (1805) and family.

On March 26, 1855 the heirs of Freeman executed a deed transfering land to Joseph W. Nunn. The deed was abstracted in: "Cumberland County Kentucky Deed Records...Abstract and Index", compiled by Laura Lee Butler and Randolph N. Smith, 1975. Leeran Publishers, 120 North High Street, Burkesville, Kentucky 42717. The abstract is in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, and the actual records are on FHL microfilm number 0804870.

Here's where I've (Gregory Brown - [email protected] ) found this (I think) Freeman Runyon so far:

1760 Born in "VA"
1787 Botetourt County, Virginia tax list. Listed with Matthew Wilson (tax paid by Wilson).
1798 Jefferson County, Kentucky. Marriage to Polly Sweney/Suainey
1800 Jefferson County, Tennessee tax list.
1806 Kentucky, tax list.
1810 Gerrard County, Kentucky, census.
1812 Bedford County, Tennessee, tax list
1820 Cumberland County, Kentucky, census
1830-1850 Barren County, Kentucky, census records.

There are several other Freeman Runyons, born 1720, 1811, 1836.

Presumably, all these Freeman Runyons descend from either John Runyan b. 1695 who married Ann Elizabeth Freeman or his brother Vincent b. 1702 who married Rachel Freeman. I've not been able to establish any connections yet. Any additional info would be greatly appreciated.
