. . . This probably seems obvious, but, the best time to ride Splash Mountain is at night because no one wants to get soaked when it's cold out. It's as a small price to pay, though, to wait in a shorter line. . .
. . . The long haul up to the top of the flume is pretty nerve-wracking, especially if it's your first time on the ride. This is a product of the Imagineers' manipulation of suspense. Splash Mountain's backstory of Br'er Rabbit abduction reaches its peak, as it were, at the same time as your log arrives at the top of the long flume. The apprehensive mood is heightened with foreboding music and darkness leading up to the drop. Then, after you "land" in the Briar Patch, the atmosphere is considerably lightened with happy music and the sunlight. The physical relief of "surviving" the drop is compounded with the created ambiance to give the rider a feeling of calm and happiness. . .
. . . By way of contrast, on Knott's Berry Farm's log ride, you just sorta float along and see various scenes and then suddenly you fall off the mountain. . .
pointless trivia
- The creation of Splash Mountain was a combination of the desire for a Disney flume ride and the need for a place to relocate the homeless characters from the recently-closed
America Sings. (Disney News, Winter 1988)
- The name of the top of the ride (under which guests plummet into the briar patch) is Chickapin Hill. (The Ultimate Disney Trivia Book)
- Most of the ride, including trees and buildings, is sculpted out of cement.
- The final plunge sends guests 40 mph down a 52-foot drop at a 45 degree angle. (Disneyland - Memories of a Lifetime) -
