Hello and welcome to my homepage and research blog. On this website I post updates on my research about a story that is very personal to me. I lived through the pains of the second world war as a child, and I remember my parents never being around much. My father was active in defending the country in ways I did not understand. We sometimes were approached by strangers and my father greeted them with a strange handshake. It has always made me feel uncomfortable and as an adult I understood that he must have been part of the secret societies. One day when I was still a child I went into his workroom and discovered that a part of the skirting board was a bit loose. I took it off and besides it was an opening. In it was a folder with multiple pages. On the pages it showed various drawings of an old wooden box with a symbol on it. The symbol intrigued me, it looked Greek / Egyptian with an eye and the words 'Awkward' written underneath it. It also had a photo in it with a picture of my father holding two cards with the same imagery on it. I then heard my father walking back to the room, so had to hide the folder and left it that way. I managed to take the photo and have kept hold of it closely for many years. I have posted a scanned version of the photo with the cards:
For many years I have been wondering what the wooden box was about and what the awkward symbol meant. As a teenager in the 50s I remember researching the word 'Awkward' in our library and found out more about it. Apparantly it is one of the earliest board games made, but there has been a ban on the game since at least the end of the 1800s. Despite awkward looking like a more modern word, its use goes back many hundreds of years. It is mentioned at least in the following books: Chambers's Journal (published in 1878) https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=kGEyAQAAMAAJ&q=%22awkward%22&dq=%22awkward%22&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjC8-TfrsLaAhWEWsAKHZ4SAQc4ChDoAQg-MAU Regulations of the United States Naval Academy (published in 1909) https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=MR5IAQAAIAAJ&q=%22awkward%22&dq=%22awkward%22&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjlnvuPr8LaAhVLBcAKHYC-CT8Q6AEIKzAB The mysterious symbol and my drive to learn more about past societies eventually led me to become an archaeologist. Many years went by, until I found the symbol again. Strangely enough it was the world of computers that brought me to it. In Windows 95 I had found an option to change the desktop theme to feature images of one of Leonardo da Vinci's codices. And that's where I found the symbol again:
I have been trying to find information about this banned game for many years. Please email me if youo know anything about it. Here is my blog so far: April 27th, 2018 This is definitely the best evidence yet, although it is confusing me. I received a video cassette in the post, which says 'new friends' on it. I have uploaded the video to my Youtube channel.
Is someone playing a joke on me? Who is this tall figure? Should I be concerned?
February 11, 2017 I have found this American(?) image of people playing games in the library, and it looks like the Awkward symbol is visible. I might be mistaken.
January 9, 2017 Today was a good day. After yesterday's discovery I have been talking with my colleague in more detail about my search for Awkward. We came up with some good theories. January 8, 2017 And there it is. Whilst visiting this museum for the university I have found the symbol once again. We were not allowed to take any photos but my search would not be stopped because of silly rules. It is hard to see, but the Awkward symbol can be found on the left - next to the hand. My colleague joked about my fanaticism and my search but agreed that it looks like a secret society relic.
July 24, 2012 I've been to the library again, specifically to find out more about Awkward, but this time in London. For a long train trek it was disappointing to discovered that it wasn't very fruitful. I didn't discover anything new, after 4 hours of searching. The people at the library were very friendly at least, and even offered me a tea. March 4, 2009 And there we have it. I've finally found hard evidence of the government's involvement. someone sent me this picture of the Lincoln family.
14 August, 2007 The government is lying. Why was it banned. 12 August, 2007 So frustrated, filed a request for more information. THis game shouldn't be played? 11 August, 2007 Found a note about Awkward, it looks like the government banned it in 1892. 21 June, 2001 That society sailed the high seas with this, and found ways to partake in cruel whale hunting. If they can do this then it means that the society has links to getting anything they want from the government.
May 17, 1999 Found these two images in the library last week. Is the symbol the society? How old is the society? THe mind wonders..
January, 1999 It is a new year. From now on I will document my search for Awkward on the worldwide web as a weblog. Please, if you have any information at all, please contact me. Awkward represents discomfort, possibly in our society. How can Awkward disrupt everything we have? Will I ever get my hands on the game?
