| Comments: | liz - i enjoyed your comments re: evolution, and i had the following thoughts in response... look what cloning is doing to standard definitions of gender and sexuality (lesbians will reproduce without the aid of men, the link between sexual activity and reproduction will become less & less clear-cut, etc). quite exciting news for those of us who wish to explode gender roles/stereotypes/definitions/limitations in this still largely heterosexist society. the role of gender in reproduction is what justifies and sustains this ideology of radical gender difference. with cloning, gender becomes irrelevant and the sexual act itself becomes unnecessary in terms of reproduction. wowza! perhaps humans will begin to think of themselves more in terms of certain marine lifeforms. i'm not a biologist, but i know that in seahorses, for instance, it's the "males" who become pregnant. and a sea-MONKEY can reproduce at least five different ways, and can even change genders during zir lifetime. to even discuss these animals in terms of "gender" seems ridiculously anthropomorphic. but our language itself is heterosexist and limiting. we lack the words to adequately describe the gender diversity present in sea-monkeys, just as we lack the words to adequately describe gender diversity in our own species. but we must begin to FIND the words. if we can describe a world, then we can LIVE in that world. plur, pix |
