THE PELOURINHO

This is the Pelourinho or the ex-Black Ghetto in the City of Salvador, State of Bahia, Brazil's first Capital City and one of the most spectacular coastal towns in the world. It was built on the 16th century by the just arrived Portuguese discoverers. With slavery, it became one very rich port and the center for fashion and "The Court" in Brazil. The Pelourinho (name of a torture device used to punish "bad" slaves) after the abolition of slavery in the last century, became a kind of haunted place. It was inhabited by the poorest populace of Salvador, like prostitutes, vagabonds, sailors and the like. In this century, after extensive rebuilt and refurbishing, the Pelourinho was transformed in a shopping area with strong appeal for the tourists. One can find every kind of shops, restaurants, good food (mainly african influenced) and etc. Just a few steps from the most beautiful beaches, the Pelourinho is motive for pride among Salvador residents.
