Sunriver Fly-out 2004
Sept. 17-19, 2004 (Two Nights)

Sunriver Spring Shake-down 2004
April 16-19, 2004

A courageous band of Oregon members devoted an entire weekend (April 16-19) to make sure the house is ready for September.  The weather was varied -- sun, ice pellets, snow, and, of course, light rain and ice.  Only one plane made it east of the mountains, and that one landed in Redmond.  But, we all had fun - hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, shopping, dining at the Prineville Country Club.  And, of course, enjoying aviation and friends.

Here are a few photos of Sunday Brunch, Greg's flight in to Redmond and his plane, the snow,
and Carl, Evan and Gustavo on the trail from Todd Lake.

Sunriver Fly-out
Sept. 19 - 21, 2003 (Two Nights)

Sunriver Resort 2003

This year we expanded in both time and numbers.  Dave, Gustavo, Jonathan, Trevor, JJ and Evan flew, and Mike, Bruce, and Kevin drove on Friday, arriving in the early and late afternoon.  (Unfortunately Marc F. came down with a flu bug.)   After dropping the gear off in one of the two houses that was rented, and with Gary and Marty joining us from the Bend/Prineville area, we had some libations, and an Italian dinner at the Sunriver Mall.  Following a get-acquainted dinner, we made our Saturday breakfast and dinner plans at the grocery store, and filled up with the necessary items from the liquor section.  The movie for the evening entertainment was Airplane, thanks to JT and Trevor.  Laughs galore as some saw the film for the FIRST time and others for the Nth time.  Some went to bed, and others relaxed in the hot tub until "last call", at 2:15 a.m.   (But there was no raucousness!)

Saturday dawned sunny and coolish.  Mike whipped up a wonderful breakfast at House #2, and we were off and on for our adventures by 11:30 a.m.  (We had to wait until it warmed up a little [yeah, right!]).  Mike, Bruce, and Kevin headed off to explore Sunriver on bikes, and the rest went to Lava Lands park, and "climbed" the Butte in style for the view (see photos) and then "hiked" throughout the lava fields.

Plans for the afternoon were changed and instead of canoeing, we decided to go up the Pine Meadows Lodge lift at Mt. Bachelor (for the view), and then head over to Elk Lake to see the lake and have lunch.  With much thanks to Gary and Marty for driving, we ended up in the emptiest parking lot at Mt. Bachelor ... closed for the season.  Darn.  On to Elk Lake.  Upon arriving, we found that 8 Model As were picnicking there, so we inspected the restoration efforts on the classic cars.  After strolling down to the lake (see photos), we noticed that the Elk Lake snack bar was closed for the season.  Darn, darn.  It was getting to 3:00 p.m. and we were getting ready for lunch.

Back to Sunriver Grocery for a deli sandwich, and then to the house for rest and libations.  Richard N. joined us from Seattle, flying in for the evening.  Evan prepared "the big salad" for dinner, and Mike whipped up a potato salad and vegetable dish - both excellent.  Dinner

members traveled from Portland (2 planes with 6 people, and 3 drove) on Friday afternoon, arriving somewhere between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.  Marty and Gary joined uswo members who live in the area came

Please pardon me if the below seems overly-organized.
In truth, it is flexible to the suggestions of those attending (subject to ground transportation planning)
See 2002 Summary below for what was done last year

Who:  You and other Cascade Flyers members
What:   2003 Cascade Flyers Fly-out Weekend to Sunriver, OR
Tentative Schedule:

The exact events will be at the whim of the attendees.  Some suggestions / examples are set forth.

Friday: dinner at a local restaurant (pizza parlor?); parlor games; starlight walking; hot tubing

Saturday Morning/Afternoon:  we'll poll those attending.  Possibilities: "poker run" to Bend, Prineville, Redmond airports; morning hike through Lava Lands or explore a lava tube; visit High Desert Museum; biking around Sunriver; golf [if everyone promises not to laugh]; afternoon canoeing.

Saturday Evening: group dinner at the house; hot tubing; parlor games; starlight walking; Movie: Airplane II?

Sunday:  Brunch at Sunriver Resort (drop-ins invited)
Where:   Sunriver Resort, OR  (15 miles south of Bend; Central Oregon)
When:   Friday night through Sunday brunch, Sept. 19-21
Why: Flying, relaxing, local activities (See Tentative Schedule above)
How: Fly (Sunriver Airport Info); Drive; Hitch     (PIC coordination)
Lodging: I have rented the same house as last year - #3 Mt. Adams.
Beds: three bedrooms (queen beds in two bedrooms; 4 bunk beds in one bedroom); 2 baths
Hot Tub: Holds 7-8, depending on degree of friendship   (expect tight quarters with 8)

Mike and Bruce have rented a second house.
What Clothes to Pack: Plan for the range from cool nights, warm days, and hot tubs.  Fair notice: some of the persons tend to be clothing-optional at times, but generally either in the house or the hot tub.
Reservation Policy: Priorities:  First "dibs" for House Lodging will go to folks committing to two nights; any additional space will then go single nighters, in order of reservation, until 2 weeks prior to event.  In other words, two-nighters trump single-nighters for beds in the House, until 2 weeks prior to event.  Then, no trumping rights.

How to reserve:  "first email to PIC / specify bed preference; then mail lodging $$ (see below) for receipt in 7 days.  You will then be advised if space is available and initial bed assignment by email.  (You can later trade beds with someone who has an assigned bed ... no, I won't be doing a bed check!)

Make checks payable to Evan Boone and mail to Evan Boone, 2422 NW Thurman, Portland, OR  97210
.

Cancellation of Reservation:  Because people must make their plans and thus a late cancellation may result in an empty space, any cancellations after August 19 (30 days prior) will be refunded once the house is fully rented for the cancelled night(s) following the request for cancellation.

Costs Lodging Cost:  Single night: $40.00; Two nights: $60.00 (Any excess over actual weekend rental cost and ground transportation will be pro-rata refunded on per night basis).

Additional costs:
Meals:  Saturday breakfast and Saturday night's dinner works well as a shared expense, subject to an equitable adj. for vegetarians; Friday night dinner will probably be at a local pizza parlor; Saturday lunch a la carte; and Sunday Brunch will be off the menu.
Activity Costs: a la carte.

It too has a hot tub, and is across the street from the river. Also, if we are flying into Sun River Airport, we just call the bell service at the airport, and the shuttle will pick us up and deliver us to anywhere on the property, but first to the main lodge to check in. Now, during the stay, they will also provide 24 hour transportation via shuttle between houses, or anywhere else on the reservation property so transportation is available.

Sunriver Fly-out - 2002

Fly-out:  Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 14 and 15, 2002 (One Night)

Place:  Sunriver Resort, Oregon  [just south of Bend, OR, on the east side of the mountains]
PIC:  Evan Boone
Events:  River Float / Paddle; Dinner and Hot Tubing (yes, that qualifies as an activity!); Sunday brunch at Meadows Restaurant.  And, of course, some wonderful flying over the Cascades and in the Central Oregon area.
Lodging: Sunriver House.

Sunriver is a resort community of 1300+ homes, lodge, restaurant, golf courses (yes, plural), canoeing, and more activities, located in the shadow of Mt. Batchelor, about 15 miles south of Bend, OR.  It has an airport "on the property".

We had two planes fly in on Saturday, with a third plane joining us on Sunday.  Evan, JJ, Dave M., and Trevor G. arrived in 142EJ @ 12:15 p.m.,

Evan pushing 142EJ into its parking spot

and Marty K. had already arrived in his Taylorcraft.  Gary P. was our local host / taxi.  After lunch at the Trout House (with a side trip to Prineville airport), we did the Sunriver canoe paddle float.  It was a beautiful day, with the temperature into the low 80's.

Sorry, no pictures of Evan -- they would have been magnificent, but just as the shot was taken, an eagle flew in front of the lens, saving you from the sight!

Saturday dinner was at the house.  Gary and Marty combined their talents for making some grilled Jalisco chicken, grilled corn on the cob (fresh), and a wonderful salad.  Another friend of Marty and Gary's, Chris, also joined us for dinner.  Dessert was a sinfully delicious cheesecake.  After dinner, the events of the world were solved in a lengthy hot tub soak.  Many thanks to Trevor and Gary, as the impromptu waiters! -- They rivaled the service of any fine restaurant (and were a damn sight better to look at than your usual "tini-ologist"!).

Sunday brunch was at 11 a.m., (unfortunately, the backlit lighting was not kind to everyone that early in the morning for a photo) which meant that Marc F., Jonathan M., and Rob H. were able to make it in plenty of time, on their way back from the Reno Air Races.

Marty, JJ, Dave, Evan, Marc, JT, Mike, Trevor, and Rob Unfortunately, the weekend was drawing to a close, so everyone said their goodbyes

The flight back was fun too, as a cloud layer was covering the Valley.  Marc and his two passengers got to go IFR; Evan and his passengers took the scenic route up to The Dalles, then down the Gorge, and back into the Portland area.
