You look deeply into my eyes
holding my gaze,
not letting go .

Your eyes, pleading,
hold me,
begging me to accept
that hard
exterior macho man,

"Take me as I am!
so tough, so cool,
I know you've never seen
such a man before ."

"I'm so different," you say,
"than anyone you've ever seen -
nomad, wanderer -
a totally dissimilar breed."

I look around me,
through the haze
of that smoky, redneck bar
and I see at least a dozen men
dressed Just the way you are.

Cloaked in armor designed to hide
the pain you carry inside
for a Brother Knight
with whom
you've taken your last ride.
