Closets are for Clothes

Friends are Forever

Gorgeous, is she not? Both inside and out.

Coreen has been a true girlfriend. Somehow she always help me to focus intellectually and emotionally on the nature of my gender identity. We talk, and talk, and talk. I have always felt like we can discuss anything.

Coreen has been a constant companion in my endeavors to escape the confines of the transgender ghetto. The world that transpeople build, in order to survive, is absolutely critical in a society where intolerance and violence are all-too common.

From early on, though, I felt that the safe and comfortable walls of support groups and trans-friendly establishments can become little more than a moveable closet. But only if we allow that to happen.

I realized the importance of being visible and proud in overcoming discrimination and intolerance. Transpeople live in the real world every minute of every day, and we should be able to live without the fear of who knows about our identity, and who doesn't.

To accomplish that, we need to be seen and heard. If people do not meet us and know us, how can they abandon their misconceptions and prejudices?

Whether it was a day-trip shopping in the Kensington area or having dinner at Earls, Coreen has come along for the adventure. Coreen says that she admires my ability to be openly transgendered. But the truth is that having reliable friends makes all the difference in the world.
