On Her Own
Info regarding Melanie's solo efforts
The first single to be taken from the album is "Goin' Down", which is due for release in the UK on September 27th. Described recently by Q magazine as "rocking hard but measured like IWanna Be Your Dog meets Skunk Anansie. Already widely anticipated and received airplay on major UK radio stations, "Goin' Down" is already making its own headlines. It has recently been reported that MTV has banned the video from being shown before 7pm due to its raunchiness and the fact that Melanie screams into the camera "i am a superbitch, i am not a whore!"

Another single from the album is "Ga Ga", which was recorded for a music soundtrack whilst Melanie was out in America. To be honest, the sound is very Garbage, which is a good thing in my oppinion, but this track can also be heard by linking to Virgin.

And finally, the title track for the album, "Northern Star" should be out around Christmas time.
Rumoured to be due for release in October, it is certain that the album, entitled "Northern Star" is to be released sometime this autumn, 1999. Apart from the above tunes, others on the album include "Follow" which was co-written by Bryan Adams, and a ballad called "Closer". "Northern Star" is the nearest to a ballad on the album, and is expected to be release, just in time for Christmas. Melanie has also revealed that TLC's Left-Eye has done some rapping on one of the tracks.
Aside from Bryan Adams and Left-Eye, Melanie has also received a helping hand from Steve Jones and two members of Beck.
Melanie's much anticipated first solo performance will take place at a secret location in Sheffield on Thursday 19 August in front of a small audience. Melanie plays her first official solo gig at the V99 festival in Chelmsford, Essex ahead of one of her favourite bands, Supergrass.
Next on the agenda is Radio One Live at Heaton park in Manchester, a free event where tickets can only be acheived by winning them on September 12th. Playing along with her are Supergrass again.
It is then planned that Melanie shall do a small tour to promote her solo stuff, a tour which will bring in cities such as London, Liverpool, Tokyo, Sydney, Toronto and New York.
"These songs are probably a very fair indication of who I am," she says. "I've
always been a massive fan of indie rock."
"Very few people so far have actually heard my solo stuff, and there has been a lot of initial cynicism which I kind of understand, because of the Spice Girls. But then, that's unfair really because Spice Girls make brilliant pop music, only it's not
considered `serious' by people who like Oasis and The Verve. Thing is, my
stuff is quite different, so it's going to surprise a lot of people."
"It's f***ing excellent, if you want my opinion."
