1.     Henry Howland, the youngest son of Humphrey Howland, was b. in England, and was the emigrant ancestor of the Lisbon family.  He came to America before 1625, landing at Plymouth, Mass.  John, supposed to be his brother, came over on the Mayflower.  In 1640 he purchased five acres of upland and one acre of marsh meadow in Duxbury, Mass., for which he paid twelve bushels of Indian Corne.  He doubtless built a house on this land and probably lived in it, as his horses and cattle were there, and probably was the house his widow gave their son John.  He m. Mary Newland, probably dau. of William and Rose (Halloway) Newman;  if so, she was b. Apr. 16, 1649 [see notes]. Henry made his will in Duxbury, Nov. 28, 1670 and d. Jan. 17, 1671.  His widow Mary made her will, May 8, 1674, and d. June 17, 1674.  Their children were:  Joseph, Zoeth [2], John, Samuel, Elizabeth, Mary, and Abigail.

2.     Zoeth Howland, son of Henry (1), was b. in Duxbury, Mass.  He m. in Oct. 1656, Abigail ---.  He settled in Dartmouth, Mass. as early as 1662.  He was killed by Indians in the middle of King Phillips War, Jan. 21, 1676.  His widow m. 2d, Dec. 2, 1678, Richard Kirby, Jr.  Henry was a Friend, and his children are recorded in Newport, R.I. in the Friend's record book.  His children were: Nathaniel, Benjamin, Daniel, Mary, Lydia, Henry, Abigail, and Nicholas [3].

3.     Nicholas Howland, son of Zoeth (2), m.Oct. 26, 1697, Hannah Woodman, dau. of Lieut. John and Hannah (Timberlake) Woodman of Little Compton, R.I.  He lived in Dartmouth, Mass., and his house was situated in the neighborhood called Pascnaansett.  He made his will Mar. 9, 1721, and d. before May 7, 1722.  His widow made her will Mar. 9, 1734.  Their children were: Abiah, Mary, Rebecca, Samuel [4], Nicholas, Hannah, Joseph, Daniel, Benjamin, Job, and Edith.

4.     Samuel Howland, son of Nicholas (3), was b. in Dartmouth, Mass., Feb. 20, 1704; m. 1st, Nov. 9, 1723, Sarah Sowle, dau. of  William Sowle [see notes].  He m. 2nd, Feb. 8, 1748, Ruth Davol [see notes] of Dartmouth.  He always lived in Dartmouth, where he died.  His children by his first wife were: Nicholas, Samuel [5], Hannah, Sarah, Alice, Mary, William, and Elizabeth; and by his 2nd wife, Silas, Eunice, Reubin, Daniel, and Weston.

5.     Samuel Howland, son of Samuel (4), was born in Dartmouth, Mass., Mar. 12, 1727; m. Oct. 27, 1748, Esther Brownell, and removed to Dutchess Co., N.Y.  He was a member of the Friends Society, and a certificate of removal was given him by the Dartmouth Monthly Meeting to join the society in Oblong, N.Y., dated Mar. 15, 1762.  His family went with him, except his eldest son George.  Another record says he m. Esther Palmer, and that he d. Jan 21, 1825.  His children were: George [6], Freelove, Elcy, Sarah, Cynthia, Jeremiah, Timothy, Charles, Solomon, Job, Benjamin, Elisha, and Jonathan. 6.     George Howland, son of Samuel (5), was b. in Rhode Island about 1752; m. Mary Warner of North Situate, R.I.  He came to Lisbon in 1783, coming, it is said, via Richmond, N.H.  He settled on lot 11, in the 7th range, being the next lot west of that of Solomon Bowles.  Sugar Hill was named by him on account of the large number of sugar maples there.  He erected the second house on Sugar Hill, which was standing in 1885.  He was a whaler in his younger days, sailing with some of the Howlands of New Bedford.  It is said that his wife felled the first tree in clearing his farm.  He d. Sept. 10, 1835.  Mary, his widow, d. Mar. 29, 1845, aged 94.  Children:

viii.         Rhode, b. ---; m. 1st, Jonathan Thompson; 2nd, an Applebee.  She had a dau. Rhoda, b. in Haverhill, Oct. 5., 1816, who m. Thomas Spooner (see).

7.     Capt. Jeremy Howland, son of George (6), was b. in Richmond, N.H., Dec. 30, 1778; m. Martha Jilson, b. in Richmond, Sept. 15, 1778.  Soon after marriage they settled in Lisbon.  Jeremy Howland was a prominent citizen, being much engaged in town affairs.  He was called Captain by reason of his commanding a company of state militia.  The date of his death has not been found of record, but his wife died Oct. 9, 1847.  Children, all b. in Lisbon:

ii.               John, b. Mar. 19, 1801; d. on Sugar Hill, Aug. 7, 1819.

iii.             George [13], b. Apr. 19, 1803; m. Mary Jilson.  He was a whaler for some years. He died in Franconia, Nov. 16, 1835. 

iv.             Jeremy [14], b. Mar. 20, 1805. 

v.               Adella, b. Apr. 9, 1807; m. Warren Bowles (see).

vi.             Moses, b. Dec. 28, 2808; m. in South America.  He was a whaler, sailing for the Howlands in New Bedford.

vii.           Royal B., b. Jan. 12, 1811; d. on Sugar Hill, Mar. 11, 1813.

viii.         Silas [15], b. Dec. 21, 1812. 

ix.              Hosea [16], b. July 12, 1815.

8.     Stephen Howland, son of George (6), was b. in Richmond, N.H., Jan. 15, 1781; was m. in Lisbon by Rev. Joshua Quimby, Aug. 16, 1801, to Polly Parker, b. June 12, 1772, dau. of Reubin Parker (see).  He settled in Lisbon, between 1802 and 1803.  Children, all b. in Lisbon, except Rhoda:

ii.               Jeremy, b. Aug. 19, 1803; m. Louis Dora Hall, b. Oct. 21, 1803, dau. of Thomas Hall (see).  She d. in Franconia, Oct. 1885.  He d. Apr. 21, 1891.

10.  Daniel Howland, son of George (6), was b. in Lisbon, June 20, 1786; m. in Lisbon, Aug. 1, 1806, Betsey Stone, b. in Landaff.  He lived in Lisbon and East Landaff, where he d. in 1879, aged 93.  She d. at the age of 81.  Children, b. in Lisbon, except the last two:

13.  George Howland, son of Jeremy (7), was b. on Sugar Hill, Apr. 19, 1803; m. 1st, Waity Aldrich, b. Apr. 27, 1806, dau. of Jethro and Elsie (Applebee) Aldrich (see).  He m. 2nd, Mary Jilson.  He was killed by a stick of timber falling on him near the Profile House in Franconia, Nov. 16, 1835.  Children:

14.  Jeremy Howland, son of Jeremy (7), was b. on Sugar Hill, Mar. 20, 1805; m. 1st, Louise Hall.  He went to Alabama, and m. 2nd, in Mobile, Aug. 13, 1835, Mrs. Sarah [Maria written in] (Wilson) Star of Mobile.  He served in the Mexican War, and after the war, he returned to Mobile, where he d. Apr.21,1891.

15.  Silas Howland, son of Jeremy (7), was b. on Sugar Hill, Dec. 21, 1812; m. 1st, Jan. 1, 1837, Eliza Oakes, b. in Lisbon, Nov. 6, 1818, dau. of Uriah and Eunice (Aldrich) Oakes (see).  She d. Nov. 26, 1885; and he m. 2nd, Aug. 17, 1888, widow Sarah C. Priest, dau. of Daniel Noyes (see).  He always lived on Sugar Hill.  He was always held in the highest esteem by his townsmen, who chose him as one of the selectmen in 1849-50, and was elected representative to the state legislature in 1855-57.  He died in Lisbon, Oct. 22, 1894.  Children:

i.                 Cordelia, b. June 21, 1838; m. July 15, 1855, Ira M. Colby.  She d. Feb. 13, 1872.

16.  Hosea Howland, son of Jeremy (7), was b. on Sugar Hill, July 12, 1815; m. Apr. 2, 1840, Phebe Ann  Hildreth, b. in Lisbon, Feb. 13, 1821, dau. of Bigham and Betsey (Taylor) Hildreth (see). He resided in Lisbon, a well-to-do farmer.  He represented Lisbon in the Legislature at one time.  He d. in Lisbon, Apr. 14, 1900.  She d. in Lisbon, Mar. 19, 1895.  Children: b. in Lisbon.

17.  Simeon B. Howland, son of Jeremy (7), was b. on Sugar Hill, May 19, 1817; m. Phebe N. Page, dau. of Stephen and Sally (Noyes) Page (see). He settled in Whitefield, where he was a well to do farmer.  Children:

18.  Charles W. Howland, son of Jeremy (7), was b. on Sugar Hill, Feb. 15, 1819; m. 1st, Mary Smith; 2nd Lutheria Bishop, dau. of Enos (see).  He settled in Whitefield.  His children were: Mary, Prudence, Porter, Ella, Jennie, Isabel, Lizzie, Lafayette, and Katie.

19.  Washington Wheeler Howland, son of Jeremy (7), was b. on Sugar Hill, May 6, 1821; m. 1st, Jan. 10, 1846, Laura A. Sawyer, b. in Bethlehem, Mar. 14, 1826.  She d. Mar. 21, 1862, and he m. 2nd, June 26, 1864, Laura A. White, b. in Campton, Jan. 6, 1840, dau. of Thomas White.  He d. in Littleton, Jan. 28, 1886.  Child:

i.                 Herbert W., b. in Dalton, Dec. 2, 1847; lives in Littleton.

20.  Cyrus Howland, son of Benjamin (9), was b. in Lisbon, Dec. 25, 1816; m. in Lisbon, Sept. 13, 1840, Evoline Bishop, b. in Lisbon, Apr. 17, 1824, dau. of Samuel and Lucy (Dexter) Bishop (see). He resided in Lisbon until about 1845, when he removed to Newbury, Vt.  He was captain in the 32nd regiment of the old N.H. Militia in 1839 to 1843.  After he went to Newbury, he was foreman on the farm of Hon. Benjamin Hale for many years.  He d. in Newbury, Feb. 23, 1892.  She d., his widow, in Newbury, Oct. 12, 1898.  Children:

i.                 Duaine, b. in Lisbon, Nov.22, 1841; d. Oct. 12, 1850.

ii.               Levi Parker, b. in  Lisbon, July 2, 1843; he enlisted in the civil war, Sept. 22, 1862 in the First Vt. Cav. Reported missing, June 30, 1863, and never was heard from afterwards.

iii.             Lucy Bishop, b. in Lisbon, Feb. 25, 1845; m. in Lynn Mass., James Parker Mudge.  They have three children.

iv.             Elizabeth Bishop, b. in Newbury, Vt. Mar. 10, 1847; d. Sept. 6, 1848.

v.               Mary Elizabeth, b. Dec. 14, 1849; m. Frank Benton of Wells River, Vt.  They have two children.

vi.             Edward Hale, b. Dec 14, 1851; m. Nellie Dutton, had two children.

vii.           Noses Hale, b. Nov. 19, 1854; m. Apr. 15, 1899, Ellen S. Barber, b. in England.

viii.         Esther B., b. Aug. 23, 1856; m. Edson Doe, lives in West Newbury, Vt. They have one child, viz, Harry Freeman Doe, b. May 14, 188_.

ix.              Hiram Bishop, b. June 20, 1858; m. Bertha Somers, have one child.

x.                Cyrus Guy, b. Apr. 29, 1860; m. Dec. 20, 1892, Elvira L. Rollins, b. Mar. 18, 1870, dau. of Samuel Rollins.  He is a farmer in Newbury, Vt.  They have one child, Edna May b. Oct. 22, 1897.

xi.              Scott Morris, b. Dec 4, 1863; d. Mar. 22, 1863 (sic).

xii.            Josiah Hale, b. Dec. 4, 1863; m. in Concord  N.H., Dec. 24, 1890, Zaidee Lenora Bernard, b. in Plainfield, N.H., Dec. 27, 1871, dau. of Joel Hammond and Nellie (Hill) Bernard. He resides in West Newbury, Vt.  They have no children.

xiii.          Evaline Grace, b. Sept. 19, 1866.

21.  Luke Howland, son of Benjamin (9), was b. in Lisbon in 1821; m. Dec. 1, 1842, Hannah Thayer, b. in Lisbon, dau. of Samuel Thayer. He enlisted from Lisbon in the civil war, Nov. 13, 1861 in Co. H, 8th NH Vol. Inft.; and was discharged as disabled, July 25, 1864. Resided in Lisbon, where his children are recorded.  Children.

i.                 Julietta, b. June 8, 1844; m. Sherburn Gleason (see).

ii.               Aurelia Mina, b. Feb. 7, 1847; d. Aug. 29, 1869; m. a Sherman.

iii.             Delos, b. Jan. 10, 1849; died Aug. 12, 1861.

iv.             Anna Emma, b. Sept. 6, 1851; m. William Noyes of Whitefield.

v.               Everline, b. Jan. 10, 1854; d. in Landaff, May 15, 1869.

vi.             James B., b. Oct. 4, 1856.

22.  Squire Russell Howland, son of Benjamin (9), was b. in Lisbon, Jan. 28, 1831; m. July 1843, Mary Ann Streeter, b. in Lisbon, Sept. 9, 1829, dau. of Joel and Nancy (Dailey) Streeter (see). He resided in Lisbon, Whitefield, and Littleton, and d. in Littleton, Jan. 20, 1882.  Children:

24.  Moses Noyes Howland, son of Daniel (10), was b. in East Landaff, Mar. 9, 1820; m. Phebe N. Howe, b. Feb. 25, 1815, dau. of Peter and Mary (Powers) Howe, and widow of Alfred Tyler of Benton.  They resided in Easton.  Their children were: Nathaniel [31], David, Maria, Susie, and Alice.

25.  Moses N. Howland, son of George (13), m. Sylvia Ann Shipman, b. in Springfield, Vt., June 19, 1841, dau. of Rev. Isaiah Shipman (see). He was a dentist in Lisbon, went to Mass., and died there.  Child:

i.                 Fred, b. [Nov. 10, 1864 written in] in Lisbon; m. Sept. 26, 1984, Rena Forbush, b. in Lancaster, Jan. 13, 1874, dau. of Henry C. Forbush (see). She d. [Oct 24, 1894 written in] Boston, Mass., while on her wedding trip, and was buried in Lancaster just one month after her marriage.

26.  Richardson Howland, son of George (13), was b. in Lisbon, June 27, 1824; m. July 10, 1847, Martha Quimby, b. in 1828, dau. of Joshua and Lydia (Jesseman) Quimby (see).  He enlisted in the civil war, Dec. 25, 1863 in Co. B, 9th N.H. Vol. Inft.; transferred June 1, 1865 to Co. B., 6th N.H. Vol. Inft.; discharged July 7, 1865.  She d. Jan. 2, 1893.  He d. in Landaff, Apr. 8, 1899.  Children:

i.                 Waity, b. in Lisbon, Feb. 1, 1848; m. Aug. 9, 1864, Charles Noyes of Whitefield.  They have two children.

ii.               Eliza Joshua, b. in Franconia, May 31, 1849; m. Stephen Joshua Eastman (see).

iii.             George R., b. in Franconia, Sept. 6, 1854; m. July 3, 1882, Mabel E. Hanscomb of New York.  She d. July 24, 1884.  No children.

27.  Jeremy Howland, son of Jeremy (14), was b. in Mobile Ala., Oct. 1, 1836; m. Mar. 27, 1860, Lavinia Walker Balliset, b. in Alabama, Apr. 9, 1844.  She d. of consumption in Jan. 1877.  Mr. Howland was educated in the public schools of Mobile, and at the age of 15 became a clerk for John Cortwright in the lumber business.  From 1853 until the war broke out he was with a firm of auctioneers, commission merchants and real estate agents.  He served in the Southern army in the 21st Ala. Vol. Inft., and was wounded in the leg.  In 1868, he commenced business for himself as an auctioneer and real [estate agent] in Mobile, where he resided.  Children, b. in Mobile:

i.                 Minow Beardsley, b. Mar. 5, 1861; m. Jan. 17, 1883, Joseph C. Moore of Abbeville, S.C.  They have one child, viz: Minow Howland Moore.

ii.               Margaret Ramsey, b. July 22, 1864.

iii.             Sarah Stanton, b. Aug. 3, 1866.

iv.             Eudora Starr, b. July 3, 1869; d. Mar. 17, 1870.

v.               Virginia Gaines, b. Oct. 4, 1870; d. Apr. 1, 1871.

28.  Francis G. Howland, son of Silas (15), was b. in Lisbon, June 9, 1844; m 1st, Jan. 22, 1865, Mary Ellen Shipman, b. in Lisbon, Nov. 7, 1846.  She was the dau. of Rev. Isaiah Shipman (see).  They were divorced, and he m. 2nd, Nov. 8, 1870, Phebe A. Simonds.  He resided in Lisbon near the Salmon Hole, where his son now lives.  He d. Apr. 25, 1901, and she d. May 16, 1906.  Child by 2nd wife:

i.                 Francis Bertrand [32], b. in Lisbon, May 13, 1875. 

29.  Kilburn D. Howland, son of Hosea (16), was b. in Lisbon, June 1843; m. Sarah B. Morrison, b. in Groton, Vt.  Child:

i.                 a son, b. in Lisbon, June 6, 1889.

30.  Henry Woodman Howland, son of Squire Russell (22), was b. in Lisbon, Mar. 28, 1850; m. Oct. 4, 1871 Georgianna Keyes, b. in Whitefield, Sept. 28, 1852, dau. of Simeon Keyes.  They reside in Littleton.  Children:

i.                 Hattie May, b. in Littleton, Sept. 9, 1885.

ii.               Edward Hicks, b. in Whitefield, Nov. 27, 1881 (adopted) 

31.  Nathaniel H. Howland, son of Moses Noyes (24), m. July 3, 1882, Elva E. Little, b. in Lisbon, July 4, 1859, dau. of William and Betsey (Noyes) Little (see).  They reside in Piermont, post office Haverhill.  Children:

i.                 Floy M., b. Oct. 20, 1888.

ii.               Carl E., b. July 31, 1892.

iii.             Millicent M., b. Apr. 29, 1894.

32.  Francis Bertrand Howland, son of Francis G. (28), was b. in Lisbon, May 13, 1865; m. June 20, 1899, Anna Estelle Nickerson, b. Sept. 1, 1872, dau. of Rev. Samuel B. Nickerson (see).  He is a farmer near the Salmon Hole, Lisbon.  Children:

i.                 Francis Nickerson, b. in Lisbon, Aug. 11, 1901.

ii.               Bessie Doris, b. in Lisbon, Sept. 26, 1907.

33.  Charles Howland, son of Daniel (10), m. Caroline Eaton of Providence R.I., and settled in New York City.  He was the inventor and patented a bell annunciater for steamers and dwellings.  Child:

i.                 Charles, b. in N.Y. City, Jan. 2, 1843; m. Kate Figel of Staten Island, N.Y.  Children:

a.      William, b. July 7, 1860.  He was a railroad advertising agent in N.Y. City.

b.     Florence, b. Sept. 4, 1868.

c.      Charles, b. Nov. 21, 1879.

34.  Caleb Howland, son of Daniel (10), was b. in Lisbon, July 10, 1807; m. Elizabeth Thayer, b. in Lisbon, Feb. 10, 1799, dau. of Levi Thayer (see).  Resided in Lisbon.  She d. in 1850.  Children:

i.                 Melissa, b. in 1824.

ii.               Lovina, b. Aug. 10, 1826.

iii.             Martha, b. in 1828.

iv.             George, b. in 1830.

v.               Betsey, b. in 1832,

vi.             Caroline, b. in 1833; died ---.

vii.           Eliza, b. in 1834.

viii.         Almira, b. in 1836.

ix.              Centrilla, b. in 1838.
