GORDON BATHGATE'S

SEVENTIES SLAMMER

** BIOGRAPHY PART TWO **

On-air at GHR

I also worked at GHR's sister station Radio Rainbow. During my time at Grampian Hospital Radio I produced the stations entries for the British Telecom Awards for Hospital Broadcasting. I was delighted when we won the Scottish heats two years running in 1990 and 1991. A few colleagues and I were flown down to London to attend the awards ceremony. I saw this as a fitting end to my 10 years with GHR and left shortly after.

I was, and still am, a keen DX'er and tune in avidly to International Broadcasters on the Shortwave band. I recorded programmes for 'semi-legitimate' stations, which transmitted across Europe and the Republic of Ireland, and was thrilled to receive letters from listeners all over the world.

Kenny Everett Lookalike

I eventually became involved with a group of like-minded individuals who were bored with the mundane sound of British Radio in the 1990's. At this time Radio Stations were formulaic in their approach and were unwilling, or unable, to look beyond their tightly controlled playlists. These enthusiasts wanted to change that and planned to apply for several new broadcasting licences that were to be advertised in the North East of Scotland. For six years I worked on RSL's in Aberdeen, Oldmeldrum, Inverurie and Peterhead and loved every minute of it.
Eventually I was offered full time work with one of these stations broadcasting to the Gordon District. I stayed there for two years before I joined Waves Radio in 1998. Since then I've presented various programmes such as The Gordon Bathgate Radio Experience, Happening Saturday and The Seventies Slammer. It's such a happy station to work for and I'm allowed the freedom to produce and present the type of show I think people will like. I try to combine all types of music with listeners requests. I like the unpredictability of going on-air and not knowing what to expect. Help I'm swamped by technology!!
In the Waves Radio Studio Now I've also started to broadcast in Cyberspace. In December 2000 I joined Golden Radio International, a web based Radio Station.
