DEPRESSION
Severe depression is more than just feeling a bit down.  People suffering from depression often lack the ability to see any good in a situation and find it easy to discount pleasant events and compliments.  They may feel that there is no point to doing the simplest of things, such as geting out of bed or even living.  A sufferer will gradually stop going out or seeing people and begin to neglect their appearance and lose interest in former hobbies.  In really severe cases sufferers may resort to self harm or even attempt suicide as they begin to feel life is less and less worthwhile.  Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain and it is important to realise that sufferers cannot 'just snap out of it'.  However the condition is treatable through medication and therapy, though full recovery may take a long time.
