ILLUSTRATIONS FOR THE G & H SECTIONS
The sfx model of the
battlestar Galactica under construction at Apogee, probably late 1977 or early
1978. The model was constructed around
a framework of steel tubing that not only gives the model structural strength but enables
it to be mounted for filming. There were several
mounts built into the model to enable it to be filmed from any angle; the one built into
the nose is visible here. Plywood bulkheads were added
to the steel tube framework, then the model was skinned withsheet acrylic. Porthole
lighting was accomplished with some 800 strands of fiber optics.
The model was detailed with styrene sheet and literally thousands of model parts from kits
ranging from Hasegawas classic Anzio Annie
railroad gun to the 1/48th scale Monogram B-29. Armor modelers may recognize the box
resting under the Galactica;
its the Tamiya 1/35 scale Sdkfz 232 8 rad, still a great kit!
