| I'll be the first to admit I will never the greatest guitarist in the world, while I have been playing for almost 30 years, my hands don't have the dexterity to be a high speed lead player. I have and always be a rhythm or a bass guitar player, but that is a very wide field. As said, I have been around all types of music, all my life, so no one guitar great has individually influenced my playing. But here is a list of those who did make an impression in my style, listing alphabetaiclly to show no special disrespect. |
| Ace Frehley - Kiss, Frehley's Comet What can I say, I have listen to Kiss for years, and was surprised when learning their last album "Psyco Circus" that all the rhythm parts I thought were Paul's were Ace's, and his style definitely had an impact, even when a 'ghost' guitarist works on them, trick to tell is if your can 'sing' the lead solo, Ace probably did it.. |
| Alex Lifeson - Rush His lead work never really impressed me, but learned about bridge chords from him, which made my playing easier. |
| Brian May - Queen Probablely made the most impression, always liked his clean sounds and what he could do with a guitar (though why didn't someone tell me earlier that he uses effects). |
| Edwin "Punky" Meadows - Angel As mentioned, Angel is my favorite band of all time, love his work, especially since the gentleman introduded me to the Stratocaster. |
| Geddy Lee - Rush Needless to say one of the best bass players ever. Introduced me into the field of keyboards, however more than the bass. |
| Gene Simmons - Kiss Gene taught me less is always more, be it bass or guitar and that playing the bass can be fun. |
| JY (James Young) - Styx, solo Always liked his over the top, in your face guitar, JY is the only major guitarist I ever met in person. The "Bad-ass" of Styx, was kindest and most sincere of all of the music artists I ever met, over the years. While his ax of choice is a Stratocaster, he introduced me personally to Ibanez guitars, and that if you wanted a "clean" sound, simpler is always better. Hence I own a Ibanez "Iceman", built to my specs. |
| Rik Emmett - Triumph Probably my favorite lead guitarist, got me interested in 12 strings and acoustic. |
| Tom Scholz - Boston Tom and "Boston" are pretty much one and same, always liked his 'fat" rhythm sound, and what the man can do with a guitar, with or without using effects.. |
| Vocalists | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Definitely have a preference here, but what can one say | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Frank Dimino - Angel | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Think pretty much covered what I can say about Frank (link above for details), is and always will my favorite (well almost... see "Karen") | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Karen Carpenter - Carpenters Too be honest of all singers and vocalists Karen is truly my favorite, no one will ever replace or compare to that alto. I only hope she will be remembered as the "classic" she truly was, and respect for the true artist she was. Karen, your are sorely missed, (but you would love the "children" of today, whom you inspired). |
| Freddie Mercury - Queen Second only to Frank in my opinion (well it might be a toss-up), Freddie was a great vocalist and showman. Another taken before his time, and his influence will always be there. |
| Peter Criss - Kiss, solo Is there a pattern here, no, not really, always loved the sound of Peter's voice (yet never liked Rod Stewart, whom Peter is usually compared to). I can also say I maybe one of the few who have all your solo work, guy. |
| Steve Walsh/John Elefante - Kansas, Streets Listed together , not so much a comparison, as they are/were the Voice of Kansas, But a good example of a band realizing that voice of a group sometimes sets the band in people's minds, John was a great replacement for Steve at time, but his tenor always had a more violin/classical sound, than the raw enegery of Steve's. When remormed if mid-80's Steve proved he was definititve Voice of Kansas . |
