Objective: Reflectively answer one of the five questions below

The main characters are Roderigo Mendoza, Fr.Gabriel and the Papal Delegate.
  1. Analyze and discuss the faith of Fr. Gabriel. Do you think this type of faith was realisitc? Do you think this type of faith is necessary in terms of building God's Kingdom here on earth? Is this type of faith necessary for anyone who tries to make the world better, who tries to defend the defenseless, who tries to work for justice?

  2. We see alienation caused by sin in the relationship between the two brothers, Philipe and Rodrigo and the alienation between Rodrigo and God. Analyze the conversion of Rodrigo and show the love and forgiveness of Christ (manifested through others) was instrumental in his conversion.

  3. Analyze the dilemma of the Papal Delegate. Why was this man such a tragic figure? What does he mean when he says, "My Jesuit prests are all dead. But it is I who am dead and they who live."

  4. St. Paul writes the folowing to the 1 Corinthians 13, v1-8; 12-13.

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. .. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Analyze this writing of St. Paul within the context of the two charactes Fr. Rodorigo and Fr. Gabriel. Is this a truth which has influenced your life as well?

  5. Analyze and discuss the ultimate decisions made by Fr. Rodrigo and Fr. Gabriel. Do you think that both of these men were still men of Faith? Besides risk, what other attributes of Faith did each man show? Have you ever been faced with a situation in your life where some type of violence was presented to you as an alternative? What was your decision?
