Melissa Leo On H:LOTS

Melissa Leo's Emma Shannon on The Young Riders is my favorite station housekeeper. Don't get me wrong, I love Clare Wren's Rachel Dunne, too. But I find Emma Shannon's mixture of maternal warmth and frontier toughnessvery intriguing. Plus, she did have a soft spot for dear Jimmy and Loulabelle ;-)

Anyway, I started watching Homicide: Life On The Streets because of her. The series, one of TV's finest police dramas, airs on Court TV. Her character, Kay Howard, share Emma's toughness. And like the housekeeper, Kay had to deal with a bunch of men -- a bunch of emotionally confused men. Sounds familiar, huh? Homicide was canceled in 1999 without much fanfare. The show, although a critical darling, didn't really capture the imagination of people weaned on Cops and other reality-based shows.

But the show had enough followers for NBC to agree to give it the series the closure it deserved. On February 13, 2000 a made-for-television movie was aired and almost all former cast members, including Melissa Leo, returned to reprise their roles. Melissa actually left the show a year or two before its demise, but she returned along with Andre Braugher, Kyle Secor and Stephen's brother, Daniel Baldwin.

The TV movie's story revolves around the shooting of former squad lieutenant Al Giardello who is now a mayoral candidate. Everybody -- from first season regular Ned Beatty to last addition Giancarlo Esposito -- returns to homicide to help find the shooter. The pants-and-tie wearing Kay Howard, who was made sergeant before her departure, is now a member of the fugitive squad. One of the squad's premier detectives, Kay drops everything to help out her former boss.

Kay Howard is talking to an informant in a fugitive case... when she learns of the shooting. She is devastated. Kay and company view tapes of the shooting, trying to find clues to the identity of the boss's shooter.
Kay tries to make out faces from the videotape, but she can't see anything. She discusses the case with her fellow detectives. The group hears news about Al. It's bad news, judging by the faces.
