Worms

Facts on Worms

A worm is a program designed to spread from computer to computer. Most take advantage of communications networks - especially the Internet - to travel withiin e-mail and TCP/IP packets, jumping from one computer to another.

Today, mass mailing worms, such as MyDoom, are one of the most common threats to computer networks. Many worms are designed to trigger Denial of service attacks that flood networks and block access to servers.

The difference between a worm and a virus is that a virus is designed to spread from file to file a worm is designed to spread from computer to computer.

Worms are spread through email, instant messaging, file-sharing networks, and the internet.

An Example of a Worm Email

Hackers are notorious for making these worm emails. The problem is many times the email looks legitimate like the one above so people would click on the link. Many read this and immediately click the link wondering why their account has been charged but in reality the email is fake but it can trick people.

One way to prevent worms is to never open any email or link that your are not sure of.
