Wah Yan Past Student Association, Edmonton

Global Reach for Wah Yan Communities

A Brief History about us

The Edmonton Chapter of the Wah Yan Past Student Association was founded in the Spring of 1987. Our aim is to promote friendship and support social, educational, cultural and charitable activities among members in a non-political and non-profitable environment. We currently have 38 members (as of February 2002) including six members on the Executive Committee. In an effort to try to reach out to all past Wahyanites in Edmonton, we would appreciate it very much if you would kindly let us know the name, address and phone number of all Wahyanite whom you know are living in Edmonton or surrounding areas.

We established two scholarships in the name of "Edmonton Award" in 1989 for Form 3 students in Wah Yan College, Hong Kong and Wah Yan College, Kowloon. We continued this tradition for 11 years. The scholarships were administered by the Principals of both colleges. Scholarship Fundraising was carried out mainly through the sales of annual Entertainment Coupon Booklet in the early days as well as generous cash donation from members and a small part of the membership fee.

A Special General Meeting was held on August 12, 2000 to discuss the most effective ways of making use of our Scholarship Fund. Because of the relative small amount collected each year, it was agreed that it would be more effective to distribute the donations received to local charitable organizations in the future rather than sending them back to our mother schools. In this regard, the Executive Committee would very much welcome your suggestion on suitable local organizations to receive our contributions in the future. Please let us know what you think.

Networking with other Chapters was first established in the Summer of 1990 during the second Wah Yan Past Student Association International Conference in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. We take pride to host our honor guests and student ambassadors whenever possible. If you are a former Wah Yan student new to Edmonton, please drop us a line. We will do our best to make you feel comfortable in Edmonton.

Here are some of things you can see and do in Edmonton.

Chapter Activities

Annual BBQ and independent evening events

Annual Soccer match with La Salle Old Boys

We are looking for soccer players. Please contact Derek or Vincent (the goalie) to join in for some fun on the field.

Visitors from Hong Kong, Vancouver and Calgary

We welcomed alumnus from Vancouver and Calgary as well as student ambassadors from WYCHK and WYK on August 4, 1998. Also in attendance were many distinguished guests from Hong Kong, including Father Deignan, Father Zee, Mr. George Tam and Mr. Raymond Yu. It was one of the largest alumni gatherings we had in recent years.

Prior to this, we hosted two student ambassadors from WYCHK and WYK in April 1991. Ron Lau and Leo Chu guided them to the world famous Canadian Rockies. The two student ambassadors admired very much the snow-capped mountains and the glaciers. They also had a chance to visit the University of Alberta and the eighth wonder of the world -- West Edmonton Mall while they were here.

2000/2001 Recap

A very enjoyable BBQ was held at Rundle Park on August 12, 2000. All those present had a wonderful afternoon of great fun and good food.

The annual friendly Wah Yan - La Salle old boys soccer match was held on September 10, 2000. Although we did not win the game, our players put up a valiant fight before their tired bodies gave in.

In September 2000, the Wah Yan College International Conference was held in Los Angeles. Due to last minute engagement, our Past President, Raymond Cheng, could not make it to Los Angeles as originally planned and therefore we had no representative at the Conference this year. Anyway, we were given to understand that the Conference was very successful and the next one will be held in Toronto in 2 years' time. Perhaps we will have a stronger presence at the next Conference.

In February 2001, a potluck dinner was held at President Vincent Lee's house. We had a wonderful evening of good food, talented singing and fellowship.

Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on June 3, 2001. It was a great honor to have out of town guests from Calgary and Vancouver joining us for this special event. Francis Chiu, Ronan Chow, George Cheng and Ken Lau drove up from Calgary while Larry Yip visited us from Vancouver. We had a great time together. A working session among the three chapters' representatives was also held earlier on the same day. We got together to discuss our mutual challenges and how to strengthen our communication or working relationship. We look forward to have more joint activities between the Calgary, Vancouver and Edmonton chapters.

September 9: Our annual BBQ was held at Vincent and Linda's place this year. It was very well attended by our members. Hot dogs, chicken wings, steak, ribs and salad were on the BBQ menu. Many of us took the opportunity to catch up with each other. Everyone had a great time.

September 23: Even though our annual soccer match with the La Salle old boys is cancelled this year, we still had a "real" soccer game this season. Our soccer match against the Chinese Catholic Church Soccer Team was played on this sunny and warm Sunday afternoon. The game was tied 0:0 at half time. We trailed 0:2 at one point in the second half. However, we did not give up and our persistence paid off. The ball went into the opposing net twice before the referee blew the final whistle.
Final score: Wan Yan PSA 2, Chinese Catholic Church 2

September 28: A Wah Yan PSA Edmonton executive committee meeting was held at Tropika to discuss details about the upcoming joint function with the La Salle old boys.

November 17: Joint family function with the La Salle old boys
More than 40 Wah Yan brothers and their families got together with 10 La Salle brothers and their families for an evening of great food at Tropika Malaysian Cuisine on November 17. Feedback from the questionnaires Ping distributed to our members recently was discussed. It was decided that we would keep the existing membership fee of $30 per year. Ping will follow up and organize the activities our members expressed interests in. As a matter of fact, this leads to our upcoming function in February. A dinner presentation is being planned. There will be two short presentations following the dinner. Ping will talk about investing and Raymond will talk about fishing. We will invite the Wah Yan Calgary and the La Salle groups to join us for this function.

February 23, 2002:Chinese New Year Gathering

July 7, 2002: It was our great honor to welcome Rev. Fr. Alfred Deignan SJ, Rev. Fr. Frank Doyle SJ, Mr. Lee Kwok-Pui (Hong Kong Wah Yan teacher 1960-1991), Mr. & Mrs. K.K. Lam (President of WYHKPSA), Mr. & Mrs. Tony Wong (WYPSA Calgary) and Ken Lau (WYPSA Calgary) to Edmonton. We were also very happy to have close to 20 La Salle old boys and their families joining us for the gathering. Even though the Wah Yan Past Students Association (Edmonton) soccer team lost to the La Salle old boys on the soccer field, once again, we all had a great time rubbing shoulders with each other. La Salle indicated that they would like to have more joint functions with us in the future. In addition to our Wah Yan brothers in Calgary, we will be glad to extend our invitation to the La Salle old boys in Edmonton also.
Thank you to everyone for your generosity in contributing to the Wah Yan Jesuit Nursing Fund. A donation in the amount of CDN$1,500 (approx. HKD$8,700) was made in support of the Fund.
