The club runs a junior chess session every Monday from 6.15 pm to 7.15 pm, except for school and public holidays, at our clubrooms at the Kelston Community Centre, corner of Gt North and Awaroa Rds. Each week there is a period of instruction - most often by eight times New Zealand representative Bob Smith - followed by tournament games against other children. The sessions are overseen by Fide Master Bob Smith, assisted by his wife, New Zealand Women's Champion Viv Smith. Current fees are $60 a year, or $20 a term. The club also organises an annual West Auckland Inter-Schools Competition in the third school term.

This is also held at the Kelston Community Centre and usually attracts around two hundred children from primary, intermediate and secondary schools throughout Waitakere City. Schools can enter as many teams of four players as they wish. The competition is held on two school days, the first being the preliminaries and the second the finals. The West Auckland winners qualify for the Auckland finals against other zone winners. For more information on junior chess please phone Bob or Viv at 8172664 or 025 786282, or e-mail [email protected]
