Beat Cafe Craft

What motivates a poet to write,
to poeticize on something—singingly,
essayingly, weirdly . . . might be the page

itself, the paper's pale camaraderie
joyous of the luxuriance whiteness'
self emits, away from the brown & green

of trees. Otherwise, it could be and
nothing else but . . . the rough-hewn
tumbleweeds, comrades in community,

the poet's cafe following you around—
expecting a retort to somebody's charm,
a sort of challenge that feeds the art of warmth.
