Background, Foreground Racket
(Church Atmosphere On A Christmas Morn)

 

Around the din of sermonizing, concelebrating,
The chirping of kids—like church birds—with
Echoing cries and hues of juvenile laughter.

Imagine Christ saying, "Blessed are the youth,
For they embrace, show us, noise of rejoicing."
So who would cast the first "shh" and praise

God, the supreme noisemaker, on the church
Hills of Roman Israel? Luckily, serious though
We are at mass (a religious nation as if at war),

We smell today peace under/over the racket.
